    Synopsis

There are some girls who have everything.

She has the right clothes, the right friends, and the right last name, but fifteen-year-old Maddie Crane sometimes feels like an outsider in her clique in the wealthy, seaside town of Hawthorne, Massachusetts. And when her gorgeous, eccentric cousin Cordelia LeClaire moves to town, Maddie is drawn toward her ethereal, magical spirit and teeters even more toward the edge of her friends' tightly-knit circle...

Then there are the jealous ones.

Kate Endicott and the Sisters of Misery-a secret clique of the most popular, powerful girls in school-are less than thrilled by Cordelia's arrival. When Kate's on-again, off-again boyfriend Trevor takes an interest in Cordelia, the Sisters of Misery become determined to make her pay.

Now Maddie must choose between the allure and power of the Sisters of Misery and her loyalty to her beloved cousin. But she'll have to give up on ever fitting in and accept the disturbing truth about the town, her friends, her mysterious cousin, and even herself as she faces the terrifying wrath of the Sisters of Misery.

    Publishers Weekly

Maddie Crane has always lived in Hawthorne, where a family name means everything and membership in a cruel, all-girl secret society, the Sisters of Misery, is required for social success. When Cordelia and Rebecca LeClaire, Maddie's cousin and newly widowed aunt, move back to Hawthorne, Cordelia's beauty, bohemian style and interest in fortune-telling draw negative attention from the preppy Sisters of Misery, especially their leader. On Halloween Night they subject Cordelia to a brutal hazing on Misery Island (from which the society gets their name)-and by the next morning she has vanished. Wracked with guilt about throwing her cousin to the Sisters, Maddie becomes obsessed with finding Cordelia. While the viciousness of the Sisters of Misery can, at points, seem extreme, the mystery of Cordelia's disappearance is compelling. Hall maintains suspense until the very end. This story's dark, sinister edge, coupled with the clever use of runes to frame each chapter, will satisfy those fascinated by witchcraft and premonitions. Setting up a sequel, Hall will leave readers eager to know what happens next in her standout addition to a popular YA genre. Ages 12-up. (Aug.)

September 17, 2009: Maddie lives with her mother and grandmother in the house her grandmother owns. She's lived in the small town her whole life, yet she doesn't have a clue what goes on. She's been inducted into the secret society: the Sisters of Misery where the leading Queen B Kate acts like Blair Waldorf. When Maddie's cousin comes back home, Maddie knows from Cordelia's first meeting with Kate that things will end badly. Cordelia's beauty and beliefs puts off the other sisters. Maddie finds herself torn between her family and her "sisters." One night, traditions become a nightmare as Cordelia is first tortured and then ends up missing. Maddie can't remember half of the night, but she knows it was awful. Can her cousin be discovered even with all these rumors flying through the air about that night and Cordelia?

A great start to a new series. The mean girlesque dram leads to dangerous behavior and you will want to uncover the truth that night just as much as Maddie. The ending will shock you and leave you wanting the next book immediately.

August 05, 2009: Sisters of Misery was an incredible novel. Part gothic, part chilling horror story, and part harrowing realistic fiction, this book has it all: mystery, romance, and gosh, a whole lot of suspense. This was one of the most suspenseful books I have ever read. Maddie Crane lives in the small town of Hawthorne, Massachusetts known for its conservative, closed community and its witch trials back in the 1600s. Maddie belongs to the Sisters of Misery, a group of ruthless girls who rule the social scene at their school. The group is led by Kate Endicott, a girl who can only be described as ruthless and completely evil. Maddie has never questioned the Sisters of Misery, going along with them mostly because her social climbing mother has pushed them at her since birth. Everything changes when her Aunt Rebecca and cousin Cordelia movie in. Cordelia is beautiful, wild, and witty and before long rumors are swirling about her. The Sisters of Misery instantly dislike her, and when Kate's boyfriend takes an interest in her, everyone will suffer Kate's wrath. After an initiation into the Sisterhood gone horribly wrong, Cordelia goes missing. The rest of the book is one thrilling, eerie ride toward a shocking climax. Maddie is a wholly human character, a victim of fear and age old prejudices. Though this story is sometimes depressing and paints a vivid portrait of the darker side of human nature, Megan Kelley Hall manages to keep the reader hooked and the novel enjoyable. Her writing style is truly unique. For example, each chapter begins with a rune and a definition of it's meaning. And while we are always there with the characters, it felt like we are there as observers, privvy to Maddie's every thought. I can gaurantee Sisters of Misery will keep you up late at night turning pages. And the cliffer-hanger ending left me desperate to read it's sequel.
