      Biography

One of the great masters of the 19th-century novel, Tolstoy created a sweeping epic in War and Peace which folds together huge events in history and politics with the emotional lives of individuals. But it was his deeply spiritual outlook that made him an icon.

August 08, 2009: This study guide is very helpful in understanding War and Peace by Tolstoy. I think it is better than the main competition in this field. The chapters help us understand what is happening in each Book and also give insight into the major characters, such as Prince Andre, Pierre and others.

The main problem I have encountered in reading War and Peace in English is that the translators from the Russian text are not able to provide enough color in the language so that we can get a sense of the characters' uniqueness and personality, compared to what we would get in a work that was written originally in English. You might compare this problem to what you would feel after reading Nabokov's Lolita, where I think you would have a more accurate impression of the main character. The translation of Anna Karinina that I read did not seem to have this problem, but then War and Peace is a much more vast work.
