May 02, 2006: Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston is an exceptionally well written novel. It talks about the issues involving love, race and gender. Janie is a very realistic character because she has enjoyable experiences along with troubled experiences and has genuine emotions. The story captures the attention of the reader from page one with its extraordinary writing technique and its moving story. The novel is written using modern language along with the standard dialect of the time which makes it very poetic. It has characters that most people can relate to or understand. This book makes you laugh as well as cry. It makes you feel Janie?s emotions and understand her reactions throughout the novel. Janie expresses her need for freedom and adventure, something most people can connect with. Hurston makes Janie so believable that the reader honestly cares what happens to her. Also, the details in the novel about the way people look and the way the towns look made it possible to imagine theses people and places. The issues in this book can easily change the way people think about their lives. Their Eyes Were Watching God is highly recommended.
