    Part 1: The films
    In 1968, when Stanley Kubrick was asked to comment on the metaphysical significance of 2001: A Space Odyssey, he replied: "It's not a message I ever intended to convey in words. 2001 is a nonverbal experience.... I tried to create a visual experience, one that bypasses verbalized pigeonholing and directly penetrates the subconscious with an emotional and philosophic content." The philosophy behind Part I borrows from this line of thinking: from the opening sequence of Killer's Kiss to the final frames of Eyes Wide Shut, Kubrick's complete films will be presented chronologically and wordlessly via frame enlargements. A completely nonverbal experience.

    Part 2: The Creative Process
    Divided into chapters chronologically by film, Part 2 brings to life the creative process of Kubrick's filmmaking by presenting a remarkable collection of material from his archives, including photographs, props, posters, artwork, set designs, sketches, correspondence, documents, screenplays, drafts, notes, and shooting schedules. Accompanying the visual material are essays by noted Kubrick scholars, articles written by and about Kubrick, and a selection of Kubrick's best interviews.

    The editor: Alison Castle received a BA in philosophy from Columbia University and an MA in photography and film from New York University (NYU/International Center of Photography masters program).     December 13, 2005: This book is the ultimate homage to Kubrick and his work. I hesitated buying it at first because of the price, but finally just decided to get it. I was not disappointed. It's not a book that you'll finish in one sitting. If you love Kubrick's work like myself, then you'll enjoy reading the articles and looking at the behind the scenes footage. The 70mm film strip that it comes with is also very cool. I was worried I wouldn't get a film strip with mine, since I ordered it in November, but mine came with one. It is the scene of the flight attendants (actually close to the picture on Imdb.com of the flight attendant serving the other one who is watching TV). I was hoping for frames with HAL, Dave, or the bone being thrown up, but at least I got one. I think BN.com also has one of the best prices and free shipping.

    June 20, 2005: This collection was a complete revelation for me. Far and away the most complete collection on the great man's work I've ever seen.Each page is a breath taking, awe inspiring jewel!This book just affirms my opinion that SK was an intellectual giant of the 20th century whose work will be appreciated for centuries to come. AND It comes with 12 frames of the greatest film ever made 2001! You must get this absolutely if you appreciate SK's work this book will treasured for many years. It weighs a ton though!
