The war against Voldemort is not going well; even Muggle governments are noticing. Ron scans the obituary pages of the Daily Prophet, looking for familiar names. Dumbledore is absent from Hogwarts for long stretches of time, and the Order of the Phoenix has already suffered losses.
And yet...
As in all wars, life goes on. Sixth-year students learn to Apparate -- and lose a few eyebrows in the process. The Weasley twins expand their business. Teenagers flirt and fight and fall in love. Classes are never straightforward, though Harry receives some extraordinary help from the mysterious Half-Blood Prince.
So it's the home front that takes center stage in the multilayered sixth installment of the story of Harry Potter. Here at Hogwarts, Harry will search for the full and complex story of the boy who became Lord Voldemort -- and thereby find what may be his only vulnerability.

The journey from child to adult is tough enough for ordinary mortals, but the trip has been unusually hazardous for the world-famous wizard-in-training. Rowling shepherds her hero's arduous trek to maturity with her customary grace and good humor, though she has infused her story with more bone-cracking and blood-spattering than may be tolerable for many of the young readers who have followed Harry's adventures so far.
More Reviews and RecommendationsA phenomenon like Harry Potter does not come along very often. The young wizard and his eager companions Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley have inspired countless children to delve into reading with a fervor rarely seen, and we have J. K. Rowling to thank for that! Rowling has created a fantastic world of wizards and muggles, ghosts and trolls, and good and evil that has completely revitalized a love of reading in both kids and adults all over the world.

February 24, 2010: This book is great for any one who likes a thrilling adventure. It starts out showing you what happened in the last six years between the muggle prime minister and the minister of magic Cornelius Fudge. I've got to admit this kind of bored me at first but it got better. Then it tells about "natural" disasters and disappearances that have been happening around the world. In the next chapter it tells you that Severus Snape is really a double agent Death Eater. He made the unbreakable vow to Draco Malfoy's mother saying that he would protect Draco from harm and if Draco should he would carry out the deed Voldemort ordered Draco to perform. Dumbledore picks Harry up to go persuade Horace Slughorn to teach potions at Hogwarts which they most successfully do. Then Dumbledore takes Harry to the Burrow to spend the rest of the summer there. When Harry gets to Hogwarts he finds that he has a lot on his plate. He does better than anyone in potions with the help of the Half Blood Prince. Furthermore Harry suspects that Draco Malfoy's a Death Eater. He has a crush on Ginny Weasley. He has to arrange quidditch practices. His newts are coming up. All this is happening while the war against Voldemort is raging. Can Harry make it through his sixth year at Hogwarts?
Again this book is a heart pounding page turning adventure. It's definitely a five star book. I highly recommend it!Reader Rating:

February 17, 2010: Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince is one of the best books ever created. Well the whole series is but I won't get into that right now. This book leaves you wanting more. You want to know if Harry and his friends ever defeat He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. Or if he ever finds out what he needs to do in the world. Here's a short summary of what's it about.
Harry Potter's only family left has died. His godfather also knows as Sirius Black. On top of that Voldemort has returned and he's looking for a person to once and for all defeat Dumbledore so he can kill Harry. Once he does that no one will ever be able to defeat him, they world's only chance will be gone. Harry finds out that he must defeat Voldemort and Dumbledore helps him on the path to success. Dumbledore shows him Voldemort's childhood and why he became the way he is. Harry isn't so sure how this will help but he listens and pays close attention to what he says. Harry finds out things he never thought would be true. This book is a must read for Harry Potter fans.
| Drugs, Drinking and Smoking: It is accepted in the wizard world that teens drink various imaginary brews, such as butterbeer. Adults get drunk. | |
| Sexual Situations: Lots of kissing (or snogging, in the British vernacular that is used in the book). | |
| Violent Situations: Lots, and increasingly vicious and bloody, with numerous deaths, and with greater consequences as the series progresses, including another death of a major character. | |
| Language: A few mild epithets. | |
| Social Behavior: Not an issue. | |
| Consumerism: Not an issue. |
About Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Harry Potter #6)
Parents need to know that, as the series progresses and the characters age, this is less and less aimed at younger children. The violence is more violent, the mood darker, the consequences greater. A major and beloved character is killed, apparently in vain, and the emotional consequences are great.
