March 15, 2005: What the Baseball Prospectus (BP) annuals are known for, and do better than anybody else, is their evaluation of prospects for the coming season -- for teams and especially individual players. This is not a compendium of historical statistics, nor does it pretend to be one. And so I've come each year to rely on BP to evaluate the immediate past season for each team and give us projections for the future. For the past few years the projections have entailed the so-called 'PECOTA' forecasts, which are provided for an enormous number of players on the rosters of major league teams. Those who want, in addition to these basic forecasts and team analyses, particular 'valuations' of players for purposes of rotisserie baseball or for making decisions on baseball auctions for either roto or Scoresheet, can also go to the baseballprospectus.com website (fee or premium required, except for historical data, which is available online for free) and get a great deal more detail about player performance including projections of performance in standard 5x5 roto categories as well as $ values. Thus, for me, this book has become essential as well as a great warm-up and reference guide for the coming season. The website provides great and up-to-date forecasts and information about playing time and expected performance, and is something I rely on throughout the season. In addition, the website provides analyses and commentary on baseball throughout the season, aimed at the serious fan.

March 09, 2005: Prospectus editors tout the superiority of its statistics over those found in more traditional publications, and it does present many interesting variations on traditional data that fans will find valuable. However true fans of baseball history will be frustrated by the omission of such basic items as a pitcher's won-loss record. More critically, player data only from 2002 to the present are included. Readers interested in a complete analysis of a player's history and records should stick with the Sporting News' Baseball Register.
