    Synopsis

As a young man, Jacob Jankowski was tossed by fate onto a rickety train that was home to the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth. It was the early part of the great Depression, and for Jacob, now ninety, the circus world he remembers was both his salvation and a living hell. A veterinary student just shy of a degree, he was put in charge of caring for the circus menagerie. It was there that he met Marlena, the beautiful equestrian star married to August, the charismatic but twisted animal trainer. And he met Rosie, an untrainable elephant who was the great gray hope for this third-rate traveling show. The bond that grew among this unlikely trio was one of love and trust, and, ultimately, it was their only hope for survival.\

The New York Times - Elizabeth Judd

Circuses showcase human beings at their silliest and most sublime, and many unlikely literary figures have been drawn to their glitzy pageantry, soaring pretensions and metaphorical potential (Marianne Moore leaps to mind). Unsurprisingly, writers seem liberated by imagining a spectacle where no comparison ever seems inflated, no development impossible. For better and for worse, Gruen has fallen under the spell. With a showman's expert timing, she saves a terrific revelation for the final pages, transforming a glimpse of Americana into an enchanting escapist fairy tale.

This Book Is So Much More Than A Novel About The Circus...by Patton-Athenae

February 09, 2010: If we were still living in early 1930's, I would drop out of school right this moment and pick up with the circus just to recapture the raw and vivid experience that Jacob Jankowski has, firsthand. Water For Elephants was so different and intriguing that I found myself reading it any chance I could get. I still don't know exactly what made this book so addictive, but I'm sure glad I finally borrowed it from a friend. I read somewhere online that this book was in the process of becoming a film and that was the deciding factor. For a few years now, I had thought about picking this book up, but I always thought I would never enjoy a story about the circus. Man, was I wrong! It was full of captivating characters and there was never a dull moment. Once the story really got rolling, it was a literary blur. I was pleasantly surprised to realize how quickly I finished this book, but I credit that to Sara Gruen's incredible writing style. About halfway through, I actually went out and bought my own copy in hardcover in order to add it to my collection. My suggestion is to give this book a try, despite what you think or what reservations you may have about it. If you're looking for something fresh and unexplainably nostalgic, this is the book for you...you won't be disappointed.

February 03, 2010: I can't tell you how many times I picked this novel up, read the description and put it back. It just never clicked with me. Until I read that Robert Pattinson may have signed on to play the lead in the film version and thought I'd give it a try. I started this book around 5pm last night and just finished it in less than 24 hours. I had to put in down in the middle to take my dog to the vet, and actually thought about bringing it with me for the waiting room. In retrospect, it would have been more interesting than Cat Fancy. Anyways, WOW! This book is filled with multidimensional characters, a fantastic story and a plot twist that I never saw coming. I enjoyed the way the author bounced from circus life in the 1920's to a modern day assisted living facility and you can't help but consider mortality, family and why organizations like PETA are a necessity. Loved it!
