Years have passed since the great miracle atop Mount Aida--a miracle known as the Covenant of Avelyn. Corona is a different place. Avelyn is about to be elevated to sainthood by the very church that once proclaimed him a heretic. And King Danube has asked Jilseponie Wyndon--the outlaw hero of the Demon War--to become his queen.
Jilseponie is torn. She can never love any man as completely as she did the Ranger Elbryan, the father of the child she lost. But she cannot deny that she has feelings for the wise and kindly king. And she could do so much good at his side . . .
Yet threat looms, one Jilseponie could never have anticipated. For the child that she lost never died--as she believes--but was stolen away by the queen of the elves. Raised in secret by the queen, he has grown to be a headstrong boy who shows every promise of being as skilled in the arts of combat as his father before him, and as powerful with the gemstone magic as his mother.
They called him Aydrian.
Aydrian: a boy raised to be a weapon. A boy who has never known the love of a human mother. A boy so hungry for fame and the sound of his name on human tongues that he will pay any price for a chance to wrest immortality from an uncaring world.
Aydrian: a boy on a collision course with destiny!
Fans of bestseller Salvatore (The Demon Awakens, etc.) will welcome the chance to follow favorite characters through yet another epic saga of good versus evil in this start to a new trilogy, in which good-hearted Jilseponie "Pony" Wyndon and her dreaded enemy, cleric-turned-weretiger De'Unnero, are caught up in fresh intrigues that tear at the civil and religious heart of the land called Honce-the-Bear. Pony, now wise to "the truth of God, of spirituality, of living beyond this mortal coil," rules as well-liked Baroness of Palmaris during an age of unprecedented peace and prosperity. Unknown to her, however, scheming elf Lady Dasslerond has taken Pony's "unborn" son, Aydrian, whom Pony thought she lost in battle during the first DemonWars trilogy, to raise in secret. Grown into young manhood, talented Aydrian chaffs against lessons in rangering and gemstone magic. He longs to make a name for himself even bigger than that of his famous father, Ranger Elbryan (aka "Nightbird"), killed by De'Unnero, and later runs away from his elven teachers and assumes the role of "Nighthawk." While Pony ponders an offer of marriage from good King Danube, De'Unnero comes out of hiding to manipulate Aydrian into destroying Pony and helping him take control of the kingdom. The many plot twists are clumsy and all too convenient, while the book concludes predictably with Aydrian gaining the upper hand over his mother and her allies. 6-city-author tour. May 03, 2003: Salvatore completely blew me away with this one. He has a uncanny knack of getting you attached to his characters, even ones that are evil. Just like his Artemis in the Forgotten Realms, he had me dazzled and intrigued with the mind of Aydrian. Once again he takes us into the world of Corona. Prepare to see a whole other side of this fascinating world.

Well, I just turned 50, but I'm still a clean-up hitter on the softball field. A couple of years ago, I found myself in horrible shape and feeling lousy all the time, and so, with the help of my wonderful and beautiful wife of 25 years, I started taking my health seriously again. Now I feel better than I did when I was 40. Fit Camp three times a week and yoga and softball and all the rest.
The other thing that I've come to learn about myself is that R. A. Salvatore and Bobby Salvatore are two different people (and I much prefer Bobby, thank you very much). It's not that I lie to readers at book signings, or anything like that, it's just that the things that are important to me are the little things in life: my family, my home. Writing is what I do, but it's not who I am. I remember one time about 20 years ago, I went back to where I had worked to see my brother, who still worked there. Gary was a few years older, and was, of course, my hero. An associate found us in the parking lot and nudged my brother, asking him what it felt like to have a younger brother who was so much more successful than he.
Gary, of course, took it all in stride, turning what might have been an awkward moment into a joke. Gary died a few years later and I'll never forget the lines of mourners -- grown men crying like babies. He was such a big part of the community, as a friend and a coach to so many kids over the years.
That brought me back to the parking lot and the awkward moment, and the truth of it all: I was not and have never been more successful than my brother, and nothing I can do as a writer will get me there. Only the things I do as a human being, a father, a neighbor, a friend, can bring me into his league.
The Barnes & Noble Review
Ascendance begins about 15 years after the events of the First Demonwars saga (The Demon Awakens, The Demon Spirit and The Demon Apostle). The demon has been long vanquished and Jilseponie Wyndon is now the Baroness of Palmaris. But her husband, Bryan -- the love of her life -- is dead, and so is her baby boy. Or is he?
The baby was, in fact, spirited away by the queen of the elves. For the last 14 years, Aydrian has been raised among the elves. But he is not, like his dead father, a legend among the elves -- he is headstrong and bitter. To complicate matters, he is a great fighter and has inherited his mother's magical powers with gemstones.
Jilseponie, meanwhile, is busy governing the bustling city of Palmaris -- and building a relationship with King Danube, arguably the most powerful man in the world. But certain high-ranking members of the Church are concerned about a shift in power with this romantic union. Jilseponie may have to do battle with the Church again...
And one of the coolest villains in recent history returns in this book: De'Unnero, the former Abellican bishop turned monster. I loved hating this guy!
In grand Salvatore fashion, the book ends with another cliffhanger that will leave readers biting their nails. And you don't have to read the previous trilogy to enjoy this book -- it's just recommended. (Paul Goat Allen)
Much to the seething dismay of his long time mistress, King Danube has asked Jilseponie Wyndon to become his queen. But she is torn. Now De’Unnero, the weretiger and mortal enemy of Jilseponie, will join forces with Aydrian, who is hungry for power–and on a collision course with destiny. . . .

This first book in Salvatore's second Demonwars saga relates events in the kingdom of Honce-le-Bear. Two forces vying for hegemony, King Danube and the Abellican church, divide Honce-le-Bear. Jilseponie, having lost her beloved husband, Elbryan, in the first trilogy, now allies herself with the church in her role as abbess and with the state as Danube's queen. Court intrigue soon threatens her position in both spheres. Meanwhile, Aydrian, Jilseponie's son, believed murdered by the demon dactyl, actually was kidnapped by elves to be trained as a warrior like his father. Aydrian has his own maniacal plans for power and pursues the kingdom for himself, abandoning the elves. The inevitable mother-son confrontation ensues, leaving Honce-le-Bear in chaos at the book's end. Although this book, with its intricate plot and writing, is an improvement over those in the first trilogy, it still contains significant flaws. Characterization often is ineffective, creating noticeable disjunction between motives and actions. The dialogue shows greater promise, but it is frequently predictable, and Jilseponie's and Aydrian's constant self-questioning shows them to be querulous not courageous. The setting here is a cross between Middle Earth and a medieval costume party, compromising the seamless integrity of the fantasy world. The book lacks the dramatic tension necessary for epic fantasy. When Aydrian can work peacefully alongside peasants and equally cheerfully in the next paragraph behead his father's rotting corpse, the ridiculous mixes with the macabre. Nevertheless this novel will satisfy Salvatore fans and seasoned fantasy readers. Those less wedded to the genre might be better off with Tolkien orBrooks. A widow and a hero of the DemonWars, Jilseponie Wyndon contemplates the possibility that she might find contentment, if not happiness, as the wife of King Danube. While Church and State conspire to claim Jilseponie's favor, others in the court work to bring about her downfall, and the son stolen from her at birth begins his own ambitious quest for power. Salvatore brings a new storytelling maturity to this continuation of the DemonWars novels. A strong addition to most fantasy collections, this gracefully told story of adventure and quiet courage is highly recommended. Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
Billed as the first entry in a new Demon Wars Saga (The Demon Apostle, 1999, etc.). Apparently, perhaps appropriately, the publishers have forgotten about Mortalis (2000), which somehow doesn't count; maybe soon we'll wake up and find it was all a dream. Anyhow, the saga of gemstone-magic-powered Jilseponie "Pony" Wyndon continues. She's now being ardently wooed by King Danube (no, he isn't blue and he doesn't waltz), while Pony's son Aydrian, raised by the elves, trained as a ranger, tutored in magic by Lady Dasslerond, is being inveigled by a shadowy presence that claims to be his (late) father. If you're already hooked-go to. If you're not, and desperate to learn all about the Demon Wars Saga, consult the first entry in the original series. Author tour
