This little book--only 80 pages--is not just written for Catholics, even though it is written by a practicing Catholic and former altar boy. It should be also encouraging for anyone who might think they're too old to write a book. It's never too late. This is the 60 year old author's first (but not last) book. Yes, there's poetry. Yet, it is cleverly, sometimes humorously written on a plethora of subjects...on love, disappointment, life in general, and a military experience...to name just a few. It is a small book with a big impact. 'Though slight stature, I was tall. Swift on my feet. Free.'

January 24, 2008: This is a gem of a book for anyone 'mature' enough to remember the Tridentine Mass, but that is not to say the author limited his exploration to spiritual themes. The title poem is wonderful, although I was a little disappointed not to find a single phrase of Latin. KINGS is outstanding, moving seemlessly from the secular to the sacred and ending with a subtle nod to the Holy Trinity. I usually find love poetry too personal, but THINKING OF YOU, LINDA struck just the right chord. Organization into sections by theme, with a brief introduction to each, would have been beneficial to many readers, but the writing remains accessible throughout. The use of poetic license was effective in some cases, such as the wordplay with innocence and incense in the title poem, but not so in other cases. The final poem, A DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH, captures the character of the book as well as that selection. Did the author intentionally 'rough up' the ending of an otherwise well-crafted poem to drive home a point? Maybe he'll let me know some day.
