(Paperback)
A Course in Miracles has elements in common with certain eastern spiritualities, representing a non-dualistic path whose metaphysics, theology and psychology are carefully integrated with its central, practical teaching of forgiveness.
Although it is called a "Primer," this book is actually a thoroughgoing introduction to the psychology of forgiveness which is integral to the thought system and teachings of A Course in Miracles. As such, it is also an introduction and overview for the Course itself. In addition, this book's extensive index renders it a helpful reference work for both students of the Course and those who are not familiar with it, but who have an interest in the relationship between psychological and spiritual thought.
ACIM requires what Socrates referred to as the "examined life," which is the key to finding a "better way" than the conflict and misery that has characterized the condition of humanity throughout its history. It was a heart-felt, earnest desire for a better way of living and relating that led to the scribing of A Course in Miracles, and it is forgiveness that represents that "better way." Yet according to A Course in Miracles forgiveness is not what we have thought it to be, nor are we whom we have thought ourselves to be.
Joe Jesseph describes himself as a "seeker" who did not always know what he was searching for, but looking back can see that his path consistently led, however winding, toward A Course in Miracles. Along the way he received an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Wyoming and spent many years as a college counselor as well as a licensed psychologist in private practice. During graduate school he was deeply influenced by Dr. Carl Rogers' "Person-Centered" approach to counseling and psychotherapy. Dr. Jesseph has been interested in metaphysical and spiritual literature, studies in altered states of consciousness, psychic phenomena and parapsychology. Some of the important way stations along his path include the Edgar Cayce material, the Seth material by Jane Roberts, the writings of J. Krishnamurti and studies in yoga, including a two month residence at Esalen Institute and a month-long retreat with Joel Kramer and Diana Alstad. He has been a student of the Course since 1987 and a member of the Foundation for A Course in Miracles' staff from 1989-92. Since that time he has worked closely with the Foundation in a volunteer capacity. Dr. Jesseph has written widely about the Course on the Internet, which writings have culminated in this book. He regards Dr. Kenneth Wapnick, President and principle faculty member of the Foundation for A Course in Miracles, as his teacher both academically and by the example of his life. Dr. Wapnick consulted closely with Dr. Jesseph in the writing of this book.

September 21, 2008: I have been studying A Course in Miracles for two years, and am delighted to come across Joe Jesseph's book. It is very straitforward and accessible in its language and style, and is filled with great examples of the application of the Course to our daily lives. Few would deny that the Course presents a very different teaching compared with what most of us have grown up with, and even compared with the work of that master of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud. It's understood that Freud made a great contribution to the study of the mind with his examination of the workings of the ego--but as a pure scientist, he never went beyond that. The Course takes us much further with the recognition of the need for defenselessness, forgiveness, and thus enters a profoundly spiritual realm. In a clear and gentle way, Joe illumines this comparison--never forgetting the essentially human nature of the material and the application of it to all our thinking and doing. I would strongly recommend this as a valuable reference for anyone serious about studying the Course, as well as anyone interested in psychology per se. It would be interesting to see such a comparison of the Course's teaching with that of Carl Jung, who seems to me to have had a greater grasp of our 'collective unconscious' (oneness of mind?) and the emphasis he placed on our creative nature. Joe? Another book?

August 03, 2008: As a student of ACIM for about five years, I have found this book to be extremely beneficial. It is very comprehensive and there is so much information in it, that I have read it more than once, with something new to be found with each study. I especially like the appendixes and my personal favorite is the index which will lead me to exactly where I want to go in the book. As a matter of fact, just reading the index, takes me on a journey as I follow through with what piques my interest on any given day. Dr. Jesseph offers very thorough explanations and descriptions of very consequential information that is found in the Course. His 'Summary and Conclusions' at the end of many of the chapters as well as his final 'Summary and Conclusions' serve as an excellent review and overview of the information presented. This book can serve as an informative abetment to many of the concepts presented in 'A Course In Miracles' as well as a companion to be read with the Course itself. Any person interested in ACIM as well as one who has been a student of The Course for many years will find this book to be very substantial.
