Beware the Old Lion Who Jealously Guards His Pride
In 1911 Arizona, as Sheriff Paco Alaniz investigates the murder of Don Santiago Castillo de Leon, he must deal with the priest who seems to be more than a confessor to the distraught widow, a runaway teenager who's promised as the tenth bride to the leader of renegade Mormon polygamists, an ex-Mormon gambler who wants to save his sister and the woman he loves from the husband they both share, and a vicious mountain lion threatening inhabitants of the Territory.

Debbie JordanOutskirts Press, 2008ISBN: 1432703307Reviewed by Debra Gaynor for ReviewYourBook.com, 03/095 starsMore than a mystery. The setting is the early 1900s. Arizona was still a territory. Hispanic Sheriff Paco Alaniz found keeping peace in Moon Valley an easy job until Don Santiago Castillo de Leon was murdered. The wealthy man was not well liked. Any number of citizens could have committed the crime. Suddenly, Sheriff Alaniz had his hands full: A priest offering "comfort" to the widow, Mormon polygamists, a gambler, and a mountain lion. Lion's Pride is so much more than a mystery. The question of who murdered Don Santiago Castillo de Leon is almost secondary to the relationships in this book. Jordan's book is character-driven. One of the issues addressed in this novel is obsessive religion. Jordan researched and studied various religious traditions. This book offers a look at faith and gender issues. The reader will find these issues relevant to our current society. Debbie Jordan, author of Lion's Pride, is also the author of The World I Imagine.Reader Rating:

May 06, 2008: I began reading this book about 3 days after the polygamists in Texas became the newest headline. And despite the fact this book is set in Arizona before it even became a state it seemed like it was hitting squarely on current issues. Debbie Jordan has peopled this novel with the endearing, the power grabbing, and the passionate. While we seek to help the sheriff solve the novels? many mysteries we become fast friends with his wife and their engaging community where several cultures are represented and several languages used. A gifted storyteller, Jordan keeps us enthralled to the point that stepping onto the main street of Moon Valley or making a visit to the Swift River settlement seems entirely possible. Will there be resolutions? Some. Will we learn to read between the lines? Hopefully. Jordan has created a novel that allows the reader to learn about an earlier time in our country?s history and how it has shaped where we are today. If we can use this reading experience to rethink how we react to situations in our own communities I think this novel can go far beyond being just an interesting and exciting story of the old west.
