October 20, 2007: Stephenson writes with authority. He makes you feel you were right there, seeing, hearing, and living the trials and tribulations of the pioneers. Their pain is your pain. 'Keep the tissue box handy!' Dreams and hopes are shattered by adversity and, like the Phoenix, new hopes and dreams arise from the ashes, and life goes on with new purpose. This is a story of the resilience of mankind to find higher values and hold on to them. The classic struggle of good and evil plays out in the purple sage of the old West as the old soldiers undertake an unplanned mission to tame the west. It is a captivating story that you will not want to put down.
