    Synopsis

--Linda Richman, autora de I'd Rather Laugh (Prefiero reírme)

Bernadette Lopez-Fitzsimmons, O'Malley Lib., Manhattan Coll., NY - Criticas

Searching for an easy and effective meal plan for his patients, Agatston, a renowned cardiologist and pioneer in noninvasive coronary artery disease, came up with a three-phase dieting plan based on high-fiber foods, lean proteins, and healthy fats. His best-selling plan promises to target waistline fat, put an end to cravings, lower cholesterol and the risk of heart disease, and reverse diabetes II. All this without worrying about portion sizes, calories, or exercise. The first phase of the diet, which lasts two weeks, cuts breads, rice, potatoes, pasta, fruit, sweets, and cereals. Patients will lose weight rapidly and their cravings will disappear within a few days, Agatston claims. The next phase slowly reintroduces carbohydrates like fruit, whole wheat breads, and cereals while dieters continue to shed pounds. Finally, patients enter a weight-stabilization period. Because they have embarked on a healthy new lifestyle, dieters will no longer crave bad fats and sugars and, according to Agatston, they will feel healthier due to chemical modifications in their blood. The book is divided into two parts: an introduction to the plan, which includes useful boxes and tips about how to dine properly in restaurants and how to succeed on a diet, and a section on the diet's three phases and their appropriate recipes. A glossary of medical terms and an index are also included. This user-friendly volume can be read in its entirety or simply used to refer to a table or recipe. Highly recommended for public and health libraries. Considering the strong publicity campaign behind this title, it should prove popular in Spanish-language bookstores.
