      Synopsis

What is GAAK? It's like ET-With teeth. It's like "The Gremlins" if they came from outer space and had great comic timing. GAAK is what you get when you mix Steven Spielberg's "The Goonies" with classic 50's style creature feature movies like "The Invaders from Mars".

When aliens from outer space invade a small suburban town and hatch a fiendish plot to take over the earth and meet the original cast of "Star Trek", four misfit kids named Zach, Jemmy, Plato, and Chubs set out to save the world from alien invasion-And all before bedtime. After all, tonight's a school night.

January 2005 - The Webcomic Book Club

"...Imagine Steven Spielberg and Tim Burton having a love-on and doing a UFO invasion epic with ordinary kids as the heroes..."

      Biography

DARRYL HUGHES is a writer from New York City, where he works and lives. Darryl's literary influences include Dashiell Hammett, Stephen King, Edgar Allan Poe, Tennessee Williams, Mark Twain, and David Mamet, to name a few. Darryl's creative ambitions began in high school in the mid 80's during an english class that turned out to be so much more, but were set aside after graduation. Unable to quiet his creative urges, Darryl finally began his writing career in the early 90's, his talents running the creative gamut from short stories, to online columns and articles, poetry, to script writing and back again. Always a die hard scifi fan, when Darryl entered the comic book industry in 2001 and decided to apply his writing talents to independent comic book creation, he drew on his life long love of classic 50's creature feature movies like "The Invaders from Mars", 60's groovy ghoulie movies like "Monster Beach Party", and 80's Steven Spielberg movies like "ET", "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", and "The Goonies" to serve as inspiration for his current creation "GAAK" with artist Monique MacNaughton.

MONIQUE MacNAUGHTON is an artist from the community of New Maryland, just outside of Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. As an artist Monique wears many hats: comic book artist, cartoonist, self publisher, portraitist, and graphic designer. Her client work runs the gamut from print publication layout and design, to sprite animation, and backgrounds for computer games. Monique's involvement in comics spans over two decades, with eighteen of those years as a professional. Chief amongst her self publishing efforts are the "Arrowflight" series of graphic novels and the online comic "UNA Frontiers". Monique's artistic influences include the golden age masters Will Eisner, Walt Kelly, Hal Foster, Wally Wood, Alex Toth, and Steve Ditko, the old school manga-ka Osamu Tezuka, Shotaro Ishimori, and Leiji Matsumoto, and current innovators like Mark Oakley, Donna Barr, and Dave Sim. Diagnosed with high functioning autism (Aspberger's Syndrome) early in childhood, Monique lends a hand to aiding the cause of autistic children and their families. "GAAK" is Monique's first collaborative project with Darryl Hughes.

September 20, 2006: I love things that are visual treats. So, the amazing creature feature/drive-in movie style cover art was the first thing to catch my eye--And the book itself didn't disappoint. I had A LOT of fun reading this one. 'GAAK' by Darryl Hughes is described as a science fiction take on 'The Goonies', but I think it's something more. It reminded me greatly of the old 1950's science fiction, but takes it to the new era. Fun to read to boot. I had to read this in 2 days just to see what happens next as the books young heroes Zach, Jemmy, Plato, and Chubs race to save their small town and the world from the kooky maniacal alien leader Gakk and his posse of 'Acme Instant Alien Kreatures' as they set out to take over the world. And the artwork by Monique MacNaughton is well executed and extremely creative. A must read for scifi fans of all ages. This would make a great movie too.

November 29, 2005: What a fun book. The best thing that you can say about GAAK is that it keeps a smile on your face while you're reading it. And what could be better than that? And for scifi fans like me, GAAK has everything that a fun alien invasion adventure should have: Small towns, clever kids, paranoid army guys, kooky lactose intolerant aliens, fanatical William Shatner fans from outer space, and Elvis lives just up the street. I'm grinning just thinking about it. It's a groovy ghoulie good time. Very nicely done.
