February 26, 2000: This is a gigantic collection of 40 stories that runs the entire gamut of Piccirilli's output for the last several years. My favorites include 'On Oswald Avenue', 'He Plants his Footsteps in the Sea' and 'Recovery.' Piccirilli knows how to write genuinely powerful scenes of suspense, terror, and bizarre humor. He's a master at atmosphere, so that even so-called ordinary events are shrouded with a warped horrific milieu. Also included are all ten 'Self' stories, featuring the little demonic creature named Self who is one of the funniest and vicious characters to pop up in modern horror literature in quite a while. There's also a nice introduction by noted writer Poppy Z. Brite (LOST SOULS, THE LAZARUS HEART) and an interview done by Richard Laymon (BITE, ONE RAINY NIGHT). And the book is signed by them all. Definitely worth the money.
