    Synopsis

Tom Piccirilli has been building up quite the cult following with his dark mysteries Shards, The Dead Past, and Sorrow's Crown. But he's also had a devoted horror following for some time, primarily through his bone-chilling short stories. Now, with Hexes, Piccirilli gives his horror fans a novel-length treat.

April 17, 2000: I was overjoyed to learn that Hexes made the final ballot for the Bram Stoker Award for Best Novel of the year. Considering the effective mood of dread and terror this book develops around its complex core of characters, I was drawn into this moving tale of horror & hope & ultimate redemption. You'll be swept up in the depth of circumstances and the wonderfully literate style of voice that Piccirilli commands.

February 23, 2000: I admit that the reason I picked this one off the shelf was because of all the quotes I spotted on the first page. Some of my favorite writers held this novel in high esteem, and I agree with them. Piccirilli's writing is strong, highly detailed, and filled with power emotion. You can feel the protagonist's sorrow and fear as he's drawn back to his hometown where years earlier he unleashed a malevolent force on his family and friends. There is a lot of strong imagery here that fleshes out the characters, town, and events that transpire, with hearty dashes of occult stuff thrown in. A big thumbs up from me.
