Synopsis

This hands on, multi-media package provides a motivating introduction to fundamental concepts, specifically discrete-time systems, for beginning engineering readers. Designed and written by experienced and well- respected authors, this class-tested learning package can also be used as a self-teaching tool for anyone eager to discover more about DSP applications, multi-media signals, and MATLAB. Unique features, such as visual learning demonstrations, MATLAB laboratories and a bank of solved home-work problems are just a few things that make this an essential learning tool for mastering fundamental concepts in today's electrical and computer engineering institutions.

FEATURES:

• Presents basic DSP concepts in a clear and intuitive style.
• Takes a hands-on practical approach.
• Integrated laboratory projects relate to music, sound and image processing.
• Includes new MATLAB functions for basic DSP operations.
• Contains over 100 problems and 10 laboratories.
• Has over 25 MATLAB demonstrations and animations useful for class.
• Most demonstrations only require Student Edition of MATLAB Version 4.0 or higher.
• Has archive of solved homework problems and exam questions.

Booknews

This text is designed to introduce undergraduate students to digital signal processing (DSP) and real signals. The authors take a multimedia approach that concentrates on sound and image signals and their manipulation using the methods of DSP. A CD-ROM, which is seen as being more important that the text, contains demos, labs, exercises, homework problems with solutions, and many actual signals and sound files that can be viewed with a Web browser or imported into MATLAB. November 20, 2000: Not for a serious DSP student. Very hard to follow even for persons familiar with the material due to the lack of distinction between critical concepts and example-specific information. Although it assumes no knowledge of phasor math or transfer functions, it lacks the solid mathematical theory that is vital for DSP professionals. Rather, it is presented in a quick-and-dirty introductory manner, which may be useful only to those with a passing curiosity in the subject. Attempts are made to present just enough information to get to the next chapter. Even though it is meant to be read by students with no EE experience, this complex subject cannot begin without a solid mathematical background, which this book attempts to do in only a few sections. Its approach is more for a technician than an engineer. Lack of answered homework problems make self-study impossible. Very disappointing.
