March 04, 2009: A modern-day Sherlock Holmes, private investigator Tony Lowell attempts to get to the bottom of a volatile mystery in Cry of the Heron. After discovering that the Malaguena and its crew have disappeared, Tony is assigned to look into the case and is faced with strong opposition from an unknown entity. A cryptic message is delivered warning him away from the case, "He says stay out of it or else." Instead of adhering, Tony gears up to search the Malaguena only to find the professed research ship harbors a dark secret. After a bizarre turn of events, Tony learns five corpses have been found by the United States Coast Guard and alleged to be the Malaguena crew members. The sixth crew member turns up in the unlikeliest of places and turns out to be an old distraught friend fearing for his life.
Gene Ayres' imagery and language draws us in from the get-go. Ayres presents his audience with frank dialogue between ingenious characters keeping us turning the pages until the mystery is finally complete.
