Bonding While Learning helps parents teach their young children to
read and write through engaging, relationship building activities.
You won't find any worksheets or drills here. You will find opportunity
after opportunity for parents to spend quality time with their children that
develops their children's literacy skills.
Since learning doesn't only happen at home, Bonding While Learning
also contains a number of special Out-And-About Extension Activities
that families use in the car, during walks, while waiting in line, and when
waiting for food to be served at a restaurant.
All of the paper materials needed for the activities are included, giving
families much more time to use the book's activities (rather than
preparing for them)!
Teaching a child to read is not just about stringing together the letters of
the alphabet. It is imparting the gifts of expression and meaning, making
sense of a chaotic world, understanding and sharing its bounty. All the
activities in Bonding While Learning focus on the relationship that
is being nurtured as the parent and child navigate together through the
world of words....
The U.S. State Department reports that thousands of children are adopted
every year from foreign countries. In combination with children growing up
in first-generation immigrant families, this results in a huge population of
new English language learners. Bonding While Learning takes into
account this immense diversity and offers parents of multi-lingual children
ideas and methods to support their child's English reading skills while
respecting the gift of their heritage language....
Between demanding careers and busy school schedules, getting caught in the
traffic may be the only time of the day when a family gathers together!
Bonding While Learning suggests activities that parents can do with
their children while on the move-and even provides materials for these
unexpected learning opportunities that may occur while waiting for an
appointment in the pediatrician's office or during an evening
walk....

February 09, 2007: This book is beneficial to every child who is lucky enough to have a parent, a grandparent, or an older sibling to take the time to use it. I know of no other outside-the-classroom literacy resource for young children and their families that's so thorough and yet so easy to understand and use immediately.

February 02, 2007: I read this book and it gave me a great perspective into helping my kids learn how to read. We have made tremendous strides since doing some of the activities. My kids are at the point where reading has become more enjoyable. I highly recommend this as a teaching method for parents and their children.
