      Synopsis

In 1960, at age 58, John Steinbeck set out with his French Poodle, Charley, to rediscover the country he had been writing about for so many years. Together, they crossed America from the nothernmost tip of Maine to California's Monterey peninsula, stopping to smell the grass, to see the lights and to hear the speech of the real America. Steinbeck dined with truckers, encountered bears at Yellowstone, and reflected on the American character, racial hostility, and the unexpected kindness of strangers. Lyrical, perceptive, and surprising, it's an indispensable portrait of our national identity.Unabridged 12 hours on 8 cassettes

      Biography

Chronicling American dreams destroyed by either injustice or the simple difficulty of the world, John Steinbeck left lasting testaments to the struggles of working people in The Grapes of Wrath and Cannery Row. His refusal to water down his realistic work got some of his books banned – and earned him a Nobel Prize.

January 16, 2010: I absolutely love this book. I enjoyed very much everything that John Steinbeck wrote, but it was all fiction. This is a more or less a factual account of one trip across America. Apart from the fact that I am planning such a trip myself, I could not put the book down, he is so entertaining, you laugh, you muse and you enjoy the beautiful stops with him along the journey. I recommend this book to everyone that enjoys traveling.

December 12, 2009: First of all, this is not a "Marley and Me" for an earlier time. That's not a criticism, but merely an observation. It's about the travels of Mr. Steinbeck, and his take on America, with a canine's "take" on the people and events along the way. Brilliant, and an insight into a legendary author. I wish I'd read it earlier, and I wish it had been longer.
