May 29, 2008: by Gayle Morrow It?s the classic journey story in 29 pages, complete with a charismatic hero, a bit of suffering, a few unpleasant encounters, lessons learned, and the requisite happy ending. It?s Hobo Finds A Home, written by Hobo (with a little help from Kevin Coolidge) - a great story for the younger set and for those more worldly readers who are not prepared to commit themselves to Homer or aren?t quite old enough to handle Tolkein. From the opening lines of ?Hobo was a little kitten who lived on a farm. Hobo was different than other cats ....? to the final colored pencil drawing by Susan Ferretti Gage showing Hobo doing what kitties do best - napping by a warm fire, this simple little book captures the essence of the journey story. The hero, who may be misunderstood (remember Dorothy?) and who has to be ?different? to leave the life and lifestyle others like him have accepted, strikes off on his own, has some fun and some adventures, then realizes - hey, ?I?m hungry, I?m cold, I?m lonely? and it wasn?t all that bad back at Farmer Brown?s. He ends up missing the very things he had run away from. Sniff. Heavy sigh. But it?s too late to turn back, or maybe the road home is impassable for one reason or another, so the hero has to forge ahead, often alone. In Hobo?s case, he tries to make friends with a ?black and white spice kitty? (think Pepe Le Pew) and with a `possum, but, alas, no luck there. He finally encounters a friendly human who helps him on his journey. Hobo?s story is universal (who among us hasn?t chafed at the ?scratchy hay? and the ?clumsy cows? in our lives?) and Gage?s drawings are charming. Hobo Finds A Home would be a nice addition to anyone?s Christmas stocking.
