      Synopsis

Evergreen, a bold, spirited allegory on dominion for the entire family, is set in a lush, Bunyanesque world where prophecy and legend are on a collision course with Kaleija - a cosmic, millennial event that triggers the awakening of a great planetary force called the Golem. Foreseeing natural disaster and cultural peril, the Golem delivers a soul-stirring warning to tribal leaders and one modern-day traveler, hidden from the natives. Hope is given when the Golem offers a gift - an enchanted chrysalis named Gaia ("Guy-ah") - and a prophecy: "Only when three worlds combine into one will balance be restored across the land."

In this series-launching journey, we accompany Gaia and her colorful escorts on an unforgettable odyssey. We share her fears when confronted by vicious marauders, discover her extraordinary powers triggered by the incivility of each new foe, and feel the exhilaration as her metamorphosis unfolds in the heat of battle. We also learn that to carry out the Golem's prophecy, Gaia must undergo one more physical change - a rebirth, with revolutionary consequences.

The core of Evergreen's refreshingly principled optimism, witty and fun-loving characters, and intense imagery is an evolving supernatural and science fiction foundation where moral development and technological innovation, cultural conflict and cosmic upheaval, and full-scale inter-species war have profound implications for the world of Evergreen - and, perhaps, our own.

A.S. Ziner is an applied sociologist, college professor and futurist. He has taught across the social sciences since 1986 when he earned his Ph.D. at the University of North Texas. Evergreen: A Space-Time Odyssey is anamalgam of his teaching and research interests. As a former national leader in applied sociology and a practitioner for over twenty years, his solution-centered career has focused on investigating community-based problems raised by clients, developing strategies to address their problems, and offering opportunities to implement the solutions he proposes. The Evergreen series is created to accomplish this process vicariously through an unearthly civil odyssey to transform the hearts and minds of our next generation of movers and shakers.

September 06, 2009: I've been looking for my next high fantasy author to help me escape from everyday life and into a mind-stretching adventure. I can only reread Tolkien, Clarke and Rowling once before it's no longer fresh and provocative. Well, my latest find is A.S. Ziner's "Evergreen: A Space-Time Odyssey" (Llumina Press, 2009) and what find it is. There are two engaging stories running parallel to one another, one supernatural and the other sci-fi, that are simply fascinating -- and soon to merge in the second volume. I found Gaia ("Guy-ah") an incredibly enchanted, highly principled and entertaining character to "watch" develop, and her loyal companion escorts as charming and sensitive to their mission as they are funny (especially Kunziah). Then there are the millions of animates called Kwak'walans beneath Lake Augur. Grog and his son Merton, who represent this culture, are a joy to follow throughout the good, the bad and ugly that Syrus - the ruler of all winged carnivores - brings to their hidden world. On the sci-fi side of Evergreen, I found myself thoroughly caught up in the modern City of Jaden on top of Mesequoya (Me-seh-koi-ah) -- a ten mile wide stump explained through an ancient legend. Among the many citizens of Jaden are Dr. Terre Bristol-Lane, her three children, their pet "chuckachu," and the Sgt. Major (who is Terre's senile father-in-law). Of course, I can't leave out Quigley ("Q") Cumberpatch, owner and operator of the Knickknackery. This sci-fi side of Evergreen is about the effects of artificial intelligence technology, corruption and unbridled corporate greed VERSUS civility, ingenuity, and the future of their city. It is here that I became engrossed in Terre's brilliant mind, her ethical dilemma related to her own science project at work called "AiCORN," and why I look forward to what Project AiTOM will bring to the City of Jaden with the help of Quigley. As for the city's wealthiest, ugliest and most unrestrained CEO, Thorstein Darkminster Forge (aka, "Thor"), well, I hope he gets what he deserves in the end. How both stories will merge in the next volume will simply be fascinating! The storylines and dark imagery would make "Evergreen" an incredible movie!

Thanks for reading my strong recommendation for this book by A.S. Ziner. It's a rare, new direction and vision in literary fiction who's time has come.
