      Synopsis

The mean streets of Philadelphia in mid-winter are no place for a homeless Irishman without legal residency status. When Michael Maguire gets beaten up, stabbed and left for dead, he finds himself hospitalized, then arrested and brought before a Federal judge.

Avoiding deportation he comes to the attention of a local construction magnate who employs him to lobby two U.S. senators in support of legislation legitimizing the immigrant labor he depends on.

Michael becomes involved with a senator's daughter, has a child to another girlfriend, smashes a drug ring his ex-wife's boyfriend is part of and maintains a strong friendship with his own beloved daughter throughout.

A gripping story, the author follows the protagonist's journey both in the United States and Ireland to take us on an emotional roller coaster exploring the problems that emanate from power, politics, love, loss and deceit.

April 14, 2008: A powerful write that had me laughing on some occasions and crying on others. So many conflicts at so many levels with the twists and turns of a strong plot matched by an equally strong character that you have to fall in love with. An honest and revealing look at the life of an immigrant. Reads almost autobiographical. Loved the book and would highly recommend. I assume the writer is Irish. Has anyone heard of him/her before?

April 11, 2008: 'When Irish eyes are smiling...' , and sure won't they steal your heart away? That's the effect this book, and its protagonist, will have on you. Michael Maguire arrived in the U.S. from his native land, Ireland, as a young man. He settles in Philadelphia, where he finds his new homeland can be rough, but works hard to establish himself. Michael has no green card he is an illegal from across the Atlantic. His story begins in the harsh winter of Philadelphia he has lost his family and home, and most of his savings, in his pending divorce. It is a cold, blistery night as he fends his way to Saint William's Church, his sanctuary. Little does he know that the cold would be the least of his worries. His first marriage in the U.S. ends in failure, yet produced a daughter who is his pride and life. Michael encounters a few undesirables from the seedier side of life that would do him harm. Still, he remains hopeful. He maintains his Catholic upbringing, thinking daily of his dear father, who, by his words and life, sustains Michael's character and goals. There are a couple sexual scenes, but only as an integral and minor part of the story. The 'feast' is served to you as every adventurous and productible part of Michael's life unfolds as he maintains being a father to his daughte as he finds new love as the culmination of his hard work comes to fruition in 1986 by the Immigration Act. When you realize the story is coming to its end, you can only hope author Marty Kay has another Michael Maguire book in the making. Oh, yes...I DO HIGHLY recommend this book.
