Synopsis
Western Washington State - Two cantankerous characters, fifty somethings fall in love - a lady state trooper and a software mogul. She is widowed, he is a confirmed bachelor. Divine intervention from another character of supernatural persuasion, which had followed them from their very births, might help their odds. The author, Eric G. Waggoner was born May 24, 1956 in Everett, Washington and has lived in western Washington most of his life. He is a production worker at the Boeing Company in Everett and a freelance writer. This is his first novel offering, a dark somewhat romantic comedy with a good helping of dangerous adventure and explosive action involving a couple of cantankerous hillbillies. He cites various influences - Hunter S. Thompson, Tom Robbins, Ken Kesey,James Michener and others too numerous to mention. A teller of tall tales, he hopes this is tall enough for you. Eric now lives in Marysville with his wife and his 16 year old daughter.

September 18, 2009: The cover of this book grabs one's attention right off the bat. The stern lady trooper tries to look aloof while a tear runs down her cheek. Obviously, she has come up on a tragic accident. The cover artist was probably not a professional, but the illustrator conveys the nature of the story. The story has a decent plot, despite the grammar deficiencies, which improve as the book progresses - this is a first novel more than likely. After some background and character developement, the plot moves right along, with incidents and accidents and of course, the all important romantic relationship between the lady trooper (Washington State Patrol) and the software mogul (patterned after a Bill Gates type presumably). They have a past they don't recall that makes the story interesting - I won't spoil it, though the reader will figure it out reading the chapter 2 flashback. They share a guardian angel - Gabe, who is the architect of their romance, though he was a bit inept and relied on dumb luck trying to please his heavenly boss. The mix of dark humor, drama, premonitions of death, moments of stark terror and sheer heroism makes for a meaty read, but the descriptions of places and exit numbers may confuse a non-native reader. If this is important, get a Washington state road map - then you can make better sense of it. Mara and Orson, the main protagonists, trooper and computer whiz make for a cute couple you will know intimately and sympathise with. The sex 'scenes' make them realistic and some of the sexual humor is crude, but funny - reflective of real people behind closed doors. I will warn you of the vividly gory and graphic 'scenes' that are brutally realistic - everything looks worse in black and white at 2 am or whatever dark hour it is - Alfred Hitchcock capitalised on sinister, macabre imagery like this. Gabe, the angel should have appeared earlier in the book, but the character works okay as presented. The other characters are somewhat stereotyped, but work well with the plot. Mara's best friend Violet and her fiance Roger remind me of real people I know. There are few slow spots and the author must have a penchant for rock trivia and doo-wop music. Some of the songs mentioned are worth a listen on I-Tunes or MP3. It got me interested - it's good music and it conveys the sentiments and emotions of the lovers well. Overall, despite the minor shortcomings, I would rate it a 'buy'. It has all the elements of suspense and danger in an action novel, a little romance, some paranormality, a bit of psychic phenomena, near death experiences, terrible explosions, bullets and fire and a car show - a car show? How about that helicopter? Drunken Halloween society bash, anyone? Go figure.
