    Booknews

In the preface, the editor remarks that in English-speaking universities there's a renewal of interest in Continental philosophy, as differentiated from analytical philosophy, which has been dominant since the Second World War. The intent of this encyclopedia is to provide a comprehensive, introductory guide. After an introduction defining Continental philosophy, material is organized chronologically, according to the emergence of each school of thought, in sections on classical idealism; philosophy of existence; philosophies of life and understanding; phenomenology; politics, psychoanalysis and science; the Frankfurt School and critical theory; structuralism; and post-structuralism. Each section begins with an in-depth introduction, which is followed by signed essays on various aspects of the topic. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknew.com)
