Believing that children often suffer because they fear that their family is not "normal," clinical psychologist, Dr. Sol Gordon, has written this nonfiction picture book to reassure them that there is no such thing as "normal," and that family differences can be understood and even celebrated. Using a brief and somewhat interactive text, the author manages to touch on a wide range of family differences including--ethnicity, economics, lifestyle, sexual orientation, religion and size. Some family problems are also touched on in an upbeat way. The many realistic, black-and-white drawings of a variety of kids interacting with their families, add to the appeal of the book, and save it somewhat from its rather textbook-like feeling. Eleven pages at the end of the book invite readers to draw pictures relating to topics such as their favorite family holiday or the home. 2000, Prometheus Books, Ages 7 to 10, $9.95. July 23, 2000: This beautifully illustrated children's book introduces some simple but important ideas. It's not about the family that a child will one day have; it is about the one from which the child comes. Children don't pick their families; they have to make the best of what they've got. Youngsters from non-normative families may see themselves for the first time in this book. Youngsters with friends from non-normative families may even learn a little sensitivity.
