      Synopsis

In search of happiness, high school student Linda Hodges leaves an unhappy home life in California in l950 to live with a favorite aunt and her family on a small farm in Texas. Although shocked by the troubled conditions apparent in her aunt's home, Linda continues on, seeking contentment with her dearly loved aunt. Despite her good intentions, Linda meets with one trial after another, including emotional and physical harassment from her teasing and flirtatious uncle. Is her uncle's seemingly playful and teasing nature proof that he is the philanderer her aunt believes him to be? Or is her aunt being overly critical? Uncertain, Linda tries to find enjoyment in school friendships and activities, but the conflict between the adults becomes oppressive. Then a family tragedy occurs, leaving Linda devastated, lost and lonely. What can she do? How does she cope?

July 21, 2005: 'Rain On My Wings' by Evelyn Horan Published by Publish America Copyright April 2005 Genre:young adult ISBN:1413767311 Lisa, editor, http://www.bookreviewcafe.com Having problems at home with her mom and stepdad, Linda leaves California in search of her Aunt Ruby in West Texas. Arriving at her aunt's house, Linda thought that this would be the perfect opportunity to get her life back in order and not worry about anything. Linda's mother gave her permission to stay at Aunt Ruby's for a while and so she got settled in. Linda made friends easily, becoming the popular girl from California. She joined the cheerleading squad and had a date for the senior prom. While everything was going great at school, things weren't so great at home. Aunt Ruby's husband, J.R. was always teasing and touching Linda in uncomfortable ways. Linda was afraid to say anything to her aunt, but had a feeling Ruby knew what was going on. Ruby had become depressed over her withered looks and broken teeth. Life on a farm was hard work and Aunt Ruby had suffered the consequences. Ruby knew that J.R. was cheating on her with a younger, prettier woman from across the way, but loved her husband and wanted to make things work. Linda tried staying away from her uncle as much as she could, but one night everything changed for Linda. The situation with her uncle took a turn for the worse and even Aunt Ruby was powerless. Linda does not expect the events that follow. The author writes a most powerful story about abuse within a household and behind closed doors. This story can really open your eyes to what's happening all over the world. Set in the 1950s in West Texas, you really get a feel for the characters. Ms. Horan gets deep into the characters' minds and pulls out their innermost thoughts. A good read.

June 06, 2005: This novel is a great departure from Evelyn's previous series about Jeannie, A Texas Frontier Girl, written for younger girls. Linda's home life is intolerable since her mother has remarried, and so she decides to visit her beloved Aunt Ruby in West Texas. She finds that life is hard on a dirt-poor cotton farm in West Texas since there are no modern conveniences...and she doesn't count on the lecherous advances of Uncle J. R. Linda loves her new school and friends, but she just doesn't know how to handle the increasingly persistent J. R. and the unhappiness of Aunt Ruby who suspects that her husband is a philanderer. This story is more mature and might help teens deal with sexual harassment in their own lives. Keep it up, Evelyn...this is a wonderful story.
