Elementary Japanese Volume One is designed for people beginning their study of the Japanese language at the basic level. It covers the first semester of college-level beginner's Japanese, and contains 14 lessons, each representing one week's instruction. It is based on the more traditional approach of segmenting the language to be acquired according to structures rather than functions, and gives grammatical explanations in enough detail to be used as a reference. Intended for use in college courses, Elementary Japanese Volume One can also be used for individual study as it consists of a dialogue, usage notes, grammar notes, exercises, new kanji and explanation, and new vocabulary.
Yoko Hasegawa is Associate Professor of Japanese Linguistics in the Department of East Asia Languages and Cultures at the University of California, Berkeley. She currently teaches Japanese linguistics at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and also serves as Coordinator of the university's Japanese language program. She received her PhD in linguistics from Berkeley in 1992.
