    Synopsis

Archaeologists working with restoration and conservation organizations and projects in Europe and North America grapple with some of the theoretical and ethical concerns involving the reconstruction of archaeological sites as public interpretation devices and promotional tools for heritage tourism. The contributions consider policy, purpose, and reconstruction dilemmas at numerous sites, among them Walden Pond, Colonial Williamsburg, Bede's World, an ancient Qarin synagogue and village, an Iroquoian longhouse, Ben't Old Fort and Fort Union Trading Post, and Homolovi Ruins. Also included are two contributions on virtual reconstructions and another on the value and future of reconstructions. Some of the 16 studies are from a 1997 symposium in Seattle, Washington.
