    Synopsis

In this irresistible novel, Sarah Addison Allen, author of the New York Times bestselling debut, Garden Spells, tells the tale of a young woman whose family secrets—and secret passions—are about to change her life forever.

Josey Cirrini is sure of three things: winter is her favorite season, she’s a sorry excuse for a Southern belle, and sweets are best eaten in the privacy of her closet. For while Josey has settled into an uneventful life in her mother’s house, her one consolation is the stockpile of sugary treats and paperback romances she escapes to each night…. Until she finds her closet harboring Della Lee Baker, a local waitress who is one part nemesis—and two parts fairy godmother. With Della Lee’s tough love, Josey’s narrow existence quickly expands. She even bonds with Chloe Finley, a young woman who is hounded by books that inexplicably appear when she needs them—and who has a close connection to Josey’s longtime crush. Soon Josey is living in a world where the color red has startling powers, and passion can make eggs fry in their cartons. And that’s just for starters.

Brimming with warmth, wit, and a sprinkling of magic, here is a spellbinding tale of friendship, love—and the enchanting possibilities of every new day.

    Publishers Weekly

Ariadne Meyers's warm and whimsical performance invigorates a colorful cast of characters. Since most of them come from the same small North Carolina town, nearly all carry Southern accents, yet Meyers makes each voice uniqueand believable: the elderly yet forceful and intimidating tone of imperious Margaret; the initially soft, timid voice of Josey, which grows stronger and more confident as the book goes on; the sassy, brassy twang of feisty Della Lee; the lazy, sexy drawl of charming-but-dangerous Julian. The abridgement is seamless. Meyers' rich, nuanced performance adds an extra dimension and will keep listeners captivated from beginning to end. A Bantam hardcover (Reviews, May 5). (June)

February 04, 2010: I absolutely love this book! Allen has wonderful metaphores that really help ground the magical with the physical. I also found myself most surprised by Josey who although she has been boxed in for most of her life, still retains a fantastic sense of wit and strength. I ofcourse loved all the relationships and found myself even empathizing with Margaret inspite of her coldness. And although I am a big fan of "Happily Ever After" which Allen is very good at, I am happy that she allowed the relationship between Josey and Margaret to remain authentic, and acknowledge that some knots are not meant to be untangled. Fantastic read--I highly recommend it!!!

January 20, 2010: When I read Garden Spells it was one of the best books I ever read and now Sugar Queen is on that list as well.

Its a story of a sheltered woman who loves candy and relates candy to life. She meets a magical lady who turns her life arouund and she starts to come out of her shell and become a happy woman. The people she meets(her friend Chloe where books follow her wherever she goes is so clever), the relationships and the events throughout the book keep you so enthralled and of course crave all the candy in the book that its hard to put the book down. She throws magic and fantasy in between that I found myself almost feeling like this magic power was going to literally pull me into the book!

I credit Sarah Addison Allen with a great style of writing, imagination and creativity that I now have put her on my favorite authors list. I can't wait for her next book. This is a must read and a great book for any book clubs.
