In these papers drawn from international conferences and projects of the same title from 1998 to 2000, contributors detail their research on the relationship between humans, particularly their population growth and economic development, and the oceans. They begin with an overview of the challenges of marine and coastal life on a global level, then describe how human activities related to marine life and management in a series of theoretical and experimental treatments, as well as a description of new research and efforts to disseminate information. Case studies follow which examine the coastal waters of China, pollution monitoring in Thailand, the Philippines and India, tracking of contamination of the Baikal seal in Russia, and research on marine mammals in the Pacific and on persistent pollutants. In a third section contributors describe research on marine biodiversity and environment in the Black Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
