This primer uses clear, step-by-step instructions to teach the basics of knitting. Beginners will learn to master the techniques that are needed before starting a project and learn which choices result in successful garments. A natural progression of skills is taught, and each skill is punctuated by a knitting project, enabling first-time knitters to create simple scarves and sweaters. Patterns are presented in an accessible format, with text, photos, and line drawings to offer advice, anticipate difficulties, and provide rescue techniques.
Author Biography: Sally Melville teaches knitting and is the author of Sally Melville Styles: A Unique and Elegant Approach to Your Yarn Collection. She lives in Waterloo, Ontario.
This is the first entry in a projected series on the knitting experience by noted knitwear designer and teacher Melville. It is a tribute to Melville's design capabilities that she has written an entire book (including 24 designs for everything from handbags to coats) on what you can do with the simple knit stitch. (Yes, knitters, the purl stitch has to wait for the second volume.) This book is like having a good friend at your side teaching you to hold the needles and getting you started with your first project. All the garments in the book are stylish and attractive, and Melville's expert instruction makes them all doable. Experienced knitters will find much to like here, including chapters on how to make successful garments and how to fix common mistakes in knitting. Enthusiastically recommended for all knitting collections. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
