Synopsis

Written specifically for the medical student on OB/GYN clerkship, this Fourth Edition text focuses on information needed during the rotation time. A list of APGO objectives in the front of the book provides page referrals to find correlating information in the text. Chapter 1 now includes a section on how managed health care affects women's health care. Each chapter features a section on case studies for self-evaluation, and authors provide case study closure in this edition. An extensive section on self-evaluation that contains questions organized by chapter is found at the end of the book.

Annotation

Designed for the OB/GYN clerkship and the national standardized exams, this reference provides key information essential to the student and practitioner. Guidelines from the APGO's Instructional Objectives for a Clinical Curriculum in Obstetrics and Gynecology, 7th Edition are incorporated. Over 2,000 questions in vignette format help in USMLE preparation, and over 100 new clinical cases hone readers' diagnostic skills. Each chapter begins with primary objectives and all are carefully edited for consistency of presentation. Twenty-five new line drawings by original artist Joyce Lavery help clarify the text.

Reviewer:Lorie M. Harper, BS, MD (Washington University School of Medicine)
Description:Updated from the fourth edition published in 2002, this fifth edition provides a concise, topic-oriented introduction to the basics of obstetrics and gynecology. The chapters are brief and focused, allowing for concentrated reading.
Purpose:Intended as a source and study guide for medical students, the book effectively uses APGO educational topics to provide a concise but thorough overview of obstetrics and gynecology. An extensive question bank, both on paper and CD, accompanies the book.
Audience:Edited by a professor and chairman of emeritus of obstetrics and gynecology at SUNY, this book is effectively geared towards medical students in their clerkships, exploring basic topics in obstetrics and gynecology every student should know.
Features:The book is divided into obstetrics, general gynecology, reproductive endocrinology and infertility, and neoplasia, with additional chapters covering anatomy, ethics, violence against women, and human sexuality. Each broad topic is divided into short, focused chapters that can be quickly referenced and reviewed. Although on the whole the topics are appropriate, outdated or rare procedures are occasionally discussed in detail, especially in the obstetrics section. The artwork is superb, although the charts are occasionally confusing and difficult to interpret.
Assessment:Overall, this is an excellent review of obstetrics and gynecology for the medical student clerkship. The APGO-oriented approach provides for concise review and quick reference of material. The artwork isskillfully done, clarifying anatomy and procedures described in the text. The question bank is also useful as a guide, although less shelf-like than other available review books.

December 18, 2006: This book is too lengthy. It contains excessive information for clinical clerckship and its questions are acutually not similar to those seen on the boards

Good Organization, But Too Many Errorsby Anonymous

September 23, 2006: The book has excellent organization following the objectives required of medical students. It also has Q/A corresponding to these objectives/chapters. Sadly, there are many, many errors and inconsistencies in the book. Often times the Q/A will test topics not covered. Secondly, some answers contradict the reading material. It makes it tough to know what to believe. I would expect things like this to be ironed out by the time a fifth edition hits the shelves, hence, my disappointment.
