    Synopsis

New York Times bestselling author Jodi Picoult is widely acclaimed for her keen insights into the hearts and minds of real people. Now she tells the emotionally riveting story of a family torn apart by conflicting needs and a passionate love that triumphs over human weakness.

Anna is not sick, but she might as well be. By age thirteen, she has undergone countless surgeries, transfusions, and shots so that her older sister, Kate, can somehow fight the leukemia that has plagued her since childhood. The product of preimplantation genetic diagnosis, Anna was conceived as a bone marrow match for Kate — a life and a role that she has never challenged...until now. Like most teenagers, Anna is beginning to question who she truly is. But unlike most teenagers, she has always been defined in terms of her sister — and so Anna makes a decision that for most would be unthinkable, a decision that will tear her family apart and have perhaps fatal consequences for the sister she loves.

My Sister's Keeper examines what it means to be a good parent, a good sister, a good person. Is it morally correct to do whatever it takes to save a child's life, even if that means infringing upon the rights of another? Is it worth trying to discover who you really are, if that quest makes you like yourself less? Should you follow your own heart, or let others lead you? Once again, in My Sister's Keeper, Jodi Picoult tackles a controversial real-life subject with grace, wisdom, and sensitivity.

    The Washington Post

Picoult is at her best, and most moving, when writing from the perspective of Anna's mother, Sara. Exhausted by Kate's recurrent illness, Sara is often on edge and overwhelmed. But she is also focused: Her tenacity, her vigilance and her support during Kate's aggressive cancer treatments all give Kate a reason to live. Mothering takes on new meaning, and the mundane becomes surreal: Kate's goldfish, according to the oceanologist Sara consults in a desperate effort to save the pet's life, requires bottled water, and the mere thought of buying Jesse a new pair of soccer cleats after Kate relapses seems "downright obscene." — Katherine Arie

November 23, 2009: Jodi Picoult's most recent acquisition includes a 13-year-old girl by the name of Anna, who is sueing her parents to the rights of her own body. My Sister's Keeper is a moving, inspirational novel that will keep you reading until you are forced to stop. The character of Anna is one that is emotionally stimulating and will keep your curiosity at it's highest through out the book. The themes of this novel include individuality, relationships, and sacrifices.

The book starts off with a very empowering quote. "In the end, though, I did not kill my sister. She did it all on her own." As this quote leads many to the assumption that Anna says it about Kate, the ending passages of the book lead many to a different conclusion. 13-year-old Anna Fitzgerald is not a cancer patient. She is not diagnosed with Leukemia and has never gone through chemo. She might as well though. Anna's older sister Kate was diagnosed when she was 3 years old and is the only reason that Anna is alive today. Anna was produced through in vitro as a "perfect match" do Kate's DNA so that Kate could always have a donor for anything she ever needed. The day arrives that Kate needs a kidney transplant and Anna is a little less than thrilled about this idea. Anna has given to Kate her entire life and the only payback she receives is complete negligence by her parents and friends. Anna has been forced to go through the countless procedures and enduring hospital visits her entire life, when one day she decides that she has had enough. Anna hires a lawyer and wishes to be emancipated from her parents for the rights of her own body. There is a long process throughout this lawsuit until eventually Anna wins the case and is able to make choices for herself. Only weeks later, Anna had passed away in a tragic car accident. Her kidney was given to Kate who was able to grow up and become a dance teacher. Looks like Kate was right. In the end she did not kill her sister, she did it all on her own.

The minute I picked up this book I was glued for hours. The tragic, yet surprising ending had my head spinning for days. This book gives out several important messages to all that read it such as the importance of family and sacrifices one might have to make. It teaches extensive lessons about choices and how they can affect your life. My Sister's Keeper is a book I will recommend for the rest of my life and is something I think all people of every age should read at some point.

November 22, 2009: My Sister's Keeper, by Jodi Picoult, tells the story of a girl named Anna, whose sister Kate has leukemia. Anna was genetically engineered to save her sister's life by being a donor. However, she eventually decides that she does not want to be a donor anymore, and decides to sue her parents for the rights to her own body. This conflict threatens to tear Anna's family apart. The lawsuit's conclusion brings a dramatic twist that the reader will never see coming. My Sister's Keeper is stunning and heartbreaking as it reveals the suspense associated with a family's need to have control and deal with a terminal illness.

A major theme in this novel is the fight between what is right and what is easy. Anna knows that her lawsuit has the potential to cast a catastrophic effect on the sister she loves, which is not an easy thing to do, by any means. Yet she carries on with it anyway, for reasons unknown by the reader until the end of the novel. Picoult writes by showing the perspective of every major character in My Sister's Keeper, which draws the reader into the story. Any person who reads this story will be captivated with every sequential word. Every word has meaning to the plot, leaving no passages without relevance.

I would recommend this to any person who loves a good and completely unique story. Also, it gives one the opportunity to see how medicine, law, and life can weave together and create a novel that is thought-provoking and honest. Though the character's perspective and time period jumps around, it only helps to develop the plot with twists and turns that will keep the reader on their toes. It is compelling enough to even make the reader question their personal ethics. Someone who loves to connect and relate to a story is perfect for this novel. The emotions that radiate from its pages will keep the reader laughing, crying, and smiling.

I Also Recommend: Nineteen Minutes, Change of Heart.
