Synopsis

Taking a long view of globalization and seeing it as a "paradoxical process in which widening social cooperation and deepening inequality go together," Pieterse (sociology, U. of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) examines the globalization of culture from the perspective of migration and diasporas. He proposes a theory of hybridization which rejects the "clash of civilizations" view of enduring difference as well as the "McDonaldization" view of inevitable cultural convergence through capitalist consumerism. In contrast, he sees globalization as both structural hybridization involving new, mixed forms of social cooperation and cultural hybridization consisting of translocal mélange cultures.
