    Biography

Kelley Armstrong is the New York Times bestselling author of the Women of the Otherworld series. She has been telling stories since before she could write. Her earliest written efforts were disastrous. If asked for a story about girls and dolls, hers would invariably feature undead girls and evil dolls, much to her teachers’ dismay. All efforts to make her produce “normal” stories failed. Today she continues to spin tales of ghosts and demons and werewolves while safely locked in her basement writing-dungeon.

May 01, 2009: Elena Michaels and her partner Clay have recently found out Elena is pregnant and they are ecstatic. Elena worries for her child though because is she a werewolf. Unfortunately those worries are no longer a priority when she visits Toronto, Ontario. Unintentionally, she opens a portal that unleashes zombie thugs and possibly Jack the Ripper from the Victorian London's underworld. Now Elena must find a way to seal the portal before they are able to capture her and steal her unborn child.

Throughout Broken, each part of the book kept me on edge and wanting to read more. One particular part of the book that I loved most was when I realized Elena was having twins. From each little hint that suggested there were more than one child, I had predicted it was twins. When my assumptions were confirmed, I was ecstatic that I was right and happy for Elena.

Although, one part of the book that I truly disliked was when Jeremy, the Alfa werewolf, had decided to leave Toronto and go back to Stonehaven because he thought it was better for Clay and Elena, even though the zombies had the ability to track them wherever they went. Elena knew that they should not run with their tails between their legs, but that they should end this now.

Luckily, even though it was dangerous, Elena decided to leave with Jamie, a necromancer that had the ability to see ghosts and control zombies, to close the portal and I became excited once more as to how it would turn out but I was still nervous for her safety.

Kelley Armstrong is an excellent author and Broken was written extremely well; she made it seem as if I was within the story with the characters. She used various literary devices to make the story realistic and to keep you emotionally attached. An example is of a metaphor: ".here we became canine scent vacuums, loping back and forth over the open areas, noses to the ground (Elena)" (274). Various asyndetons are also used such as "...take them with my blessing, close the portal, heal your boy there (Hull)" (375). In addition, there were assortments of polysndetons, for instance, ". between the exhaust fumes and the smog and the stink of a thousand daily passersby. (Elena)" (151).

Broken is well worth the read. Kelley Armstrong has created another fantastic adventure in the Women in the Other World series. The book is an entertaining piece of fiction that's dark, snappy, and original.
