    Synopsis

This summer the Penderwick sisters have a wonderful surprise: a holiday on the grounds of a beautiful estate called Arundel. Soon they are busy discovering the summertime magic of Arundel’s sprawling gardens, treasure-filled attic, tame rabbits, and the cook who makes the best gingerbread in Massachusetts. But the best discovery of all is Jeffrey Tifton, son of Arundel’s owner, who quickly proves to be the perfect companion for their adventures.

The icy-hearted Mrs. Tifton is not as pleased with the Penderwicks as Jeffrey is, though, and warns the new friends to stay out of trouble. Which, of course, they will—won’t they? One thing’s for sure: it will be a summer the Penderwicks will never forget.

Deliciously nostalgic and quaintly witty, this is a story as breezy and carefree as a summer day.

    Child Magazine

Sunny and carefree as a June morning, this old-fashioned story takes readers along on one family's unforgettable summer vacation. The four Penderwick sisters and their father rent a cottage on a Massachusetts estate-home to a kind teenage gardener; a lonely boy named Jeffrey; and his fearfully snobbish mother, who disdains her renters and threatens to send her son to military school. Crisp, witty dialogue and supple storytelling propel this happy celebration of sisterhood, individuality, and the simple pleasures of summer. (ages 8 to 12)

October 18, 2009: I bought this to read with my granddaughter, and it is an extraordinary tale that provides many opportunities for conversations beyond the story itself. The four sisters are as different as night and day, but each is lovable and plays a part in the unraveling of a summer of fun. From discussions of how it must feel to miss one's mother, or what it must be like to be an only child, to why the snooty Mrs. Tipton is so class-conscious - when it makes little difference to the children - there are many chances to observe what "makes us tick" as families.

June 13, 2009: I was looking for a book for my 8 year old granddaughter who goes through books like a garbage disposal. A young girl standing next to me at Barnes & Noble recommended this series for her. I took a chance.

She loved it! Used her own money to buy the next book in the series because the Library didn't have it and I was out of town so she couldn't put the "touch" on me for it. This series of books is an amazing find and I can't be more pleased with the outcome. I have another 8 year old granddaughter who loves to read. I'll be sending these books to her, too.
