      Library Journal

Through this finely designed and printed collection of color and black-and-white photographs, Greenfield-Sanders demonstrates portraiture at its very best. Not only does the photographer beautifully compose and light each of the 200 portraits like a master painter, he allows all of his subjects to simply present themselves to the camera. Taken with a classic large-format Deardorff view camera, the portraits are not only richly detailed, but they also offer striking insight into the character of his famous subjects, including actors, directors, artists, musicians, writers, and porn stars, both fully clothed and nude. Art critic and curator Paparoni has masterfully selected and arranged the portraits in the large-format book and has also contributed an excellent critique and biography of the photographer. The front matter includes an interview with the artist and other short essays; however, as the title suggests, the strength of Face to Face lies in the technically and artistically exquisite portraits in which notable people, from Steven Spielberg to Norman Mailer, naturally look back at the camera. This fine collection of portraits is highly recommended, especially for photography collections in large public and academic libraries.-Raymond Bial, First Light Photography, Urbana, IL Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
