    Synopsis

Mom says karma always comes around to get you, and I guess it's true. Because last summer I was a total liar, and now, right in the middle of Mr. Pritchard's third-period math class, my whole world is about to come crashing down.

That's because while Devon was living with her grandmother for the summer, she told her "summer friend," Lexi, that she was really popular back home and dating Jared Bentley, only the most popular guy at school. Harmless lies, right? Wrong. Not when Lexi is standing at the front of Devon's class, having just moved to Devon's town. Uh-oh.

Devon knows there's only one way to handle this — she'll just have to become popular! But how is Devon supposed to accomplish that when she's never even talked to Jared, much less dated him?! And it seems the more Devon tries to keep up her "image," the more things go wrong. Her family thinks she's nuts, her best friend won't speak to her, and, as if it's not all complicated enough, Jared starts crushing on Lexi and Devon starts crushing on Jared's best friend, Luke. It all has Devon wondering — who is the real Devon Delaney?

    KLIATT

One lie leads to another, and another. Devon's efforts to be loyal to her true friend Mel, while keeping up a front with "summer friend" Lexi, have her head spinning. During the summer Devon stayed with her grandparents and met Lexi. They became fast friends, and Devon became Devi. Like Lexi, Devi wears cutesy clothes, likes "Dance, Dance Revolution," and is a member of the A-list. During the school year, Devon is best friends with Mel, isn't consumed with clothes, and is definitely not on the A-list. Surprise! Lexi moves and now attends Devon's school. Instead of confessing her school personality to Lexi, Devon tells one lie and starts the shift to Devi. Mel's push for Devon to ‘fess up strains their friendship and Lexi's discovery of the facade proves to be the final straw. Devon must decide who and what is most important to her. Barnholdt has written a quick-paced, believable story of modern teens. While searching for the Devon she wants to be, our heroine learns that true friends are found where you least expect them.

November 08, 2009: This book was truly awesome. There is so much suspense when Devon has to act popular! The book is very absorbing. It is funny at some parts. The characters are presented well. There are good lessons stored inside. I shared this book with my friend. You can learn so much about yourself when you meet Devon! I wouldn't recommend it for class reads, but definitley a just for fun book! It is so absorbing! You will finish it in 2 days! The author does a great job of creating suspense.

    I Also Recommend: Shug.
