      Synopsis

An entire year of daily plans with circle time activities, music and movement activities, suggested books, and learning center ideas. Organized around units that are two weeks long. Includes an extremely useful appendix packed with words to songs, directions to favorite games, recipes, directions for making props, and lots more.

      Children's Literature

Billed as a developmentally appropriate approach to working with 3, 4 and 5-year-olds, this 463-page book contains activities for 25 different two-week themes based primarily on the learning center approach. The introduction includes the rationale for using a theme/learning center approach, and provides a sample daily schedule as well as advice for setting up learning centers. Themes such as Gotta Be Me, The Funny Farm, Workers, Wheels, Sound and Movement and The Forest Comes to Us are presented in a step- by-step, day-to-day format. Each day is divided into the whole child concepts such as Art, Fine Motor Skills, Language, Math or Science, Gross Motor Skills, and Dramatic Play. Recipes for cooking and art, finger plays and songs, reproducible patterns, and directions for making crafts are included at the end of the book. While some social-emotional activities are included, there is no emphasis on them as important skills for preschoolers. The book is a well-organized resource, and would make a good supplement to the early childhood teacher's repertoire.
