Frances and Thelma are best friends most of the time. When Frances goes to Thelma's house for a tea party, Mother says, "Be careful. When you play with Thelma you always get the worst of it." But Frances isn't careful and her good friend Thelma sells her an old plastic tea set, when Frances really wants a new china one with pretty blue pictures. Worst of all, there are no backsies! But with some clever thinking, Frances ends up getting the best of a bad bargain.
Russell Hoban has written many books for children, including Arthur's New Power illustrated by Byron Barton, Dinner at Alberta's illustrated by James Marshall, and seven books about Frances the badger.
Lillian Hoban has written and illustrated many popular I Can Read Books, including Joe and Betsy the Dinosaur, Silly Tilly's Thanksgiving Dinner, and nine stories about Arthur the chimpanzee. She has also illustrated several of the Frances picture books.

September 17, 2008: My son is going to be 4 in 3 months and he has been with 'I can read' for long time. Compares to other #2-reading with helps, I really doubt how much he could understand this story. It is a interesting story talks about how a sneaky girl played dirty tricks to fool her good friend Frances and how Frances revenged when she realized it.... Basically these books shouldn't be too hard to undewrstand. I personally think Mouse Tales/Mouse Soup, alligator, dinosaur, Morris the moose are much easier for kids b/c when they know what they are reading it is more attractive to continue.
