    Synopsis

Tanenbaum's last novel, Fury, ended with a breathtaking cliff-hanger. Now readers can enjoy the exciting conclusion — bursting with more suspenseful twists — in his latest, Counterplay.

When betrayal results in the cold-blooded murder of a busload of school children to accomplish the escape from custody of vicious sociopath Andrew Kane, New York District Attorney Butch Karp finds himself embroiled in a raging quest for vengeance that could cost him, his family, and thousands of others their lives. Yet again, Robert K. Tanenbaum writes a masterful thriller involving the most memorable — and "un-put-downable" — stories of corruption and courtroom confrontations. Counterplay, the latest book in the bestselling Butch Karp/Marlene Ciampi series, proves to be another full-bodied, riveting page-turner with yet another cliff-hanger not soon to be forgotten.

    Publishers Weekly

Thriller fans with a high tolerance for improbability will best appreciate Tanenbaum's latest Butch Karp novel, which picks up where Fury (2005) left off. The Manhattan DA has foiled psychopath Andrew Kane's bid to become the mayor of New York City; Kane, the former head of a law firm, awaits trial for murder at the Tombs. When Kane's attorneys seek their own psychiatric evaluation, they arrange for the high-risk prisoner to be examined at a private hospital upstate. Few readers will be surprised when the convoy is waylaid, allowing the criminal mastermind to escape and plot a bigger crime. Having allied himself with al-Qaeda, Kane seeks to bring about a cataclysmic act of terror while getting revenge on Karp and his allies. Unconvincing character reactions don't help the over-the-top plot, though the cliffhanger ending is sure to shock longtime followers of the series. (Sept.) Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

December 03, 2006: After reading all of Robert Tanenbaum's previous books, I was excited when I saw 'Counterplay' at the book store and immediately purchased the book based on my prior positive experiences. BIG MISTAKE! Either Robert has a whole new personality and writing style, or he did not write this. I am at page 41, I feel I have given this book all of the time it deserves. So far, I have had every character rehashed, and the converstaion style is not at all the same as last reads. My eyes actually glazed over at one point. Understanding that Robert is a fellow NYer I should track him down and demand my money back. I should have read the reviews for this prior, but once again, in the past I had not been disappointed. Please read this and don't waste your time or money.
