January 14, 2008: This is a good reference for the practical information required to plan, deploy, maintain, and support Office SharePoint Server 2007 solutions. The overall structure and organization of the book is well thought out. As a Taxonomist particularly interested the in usability of information and the relevance of that information within the enterprise I submit the process of getting to the data is paramount. Warehousing data in a huge Knowledge Base solves nothing. Analysis of the collected data must be possible and the easier, and often the faster, the better. The sooner the solutions which positively impact business are devised the sooner the efficiencies pay dividends. Analysis cannot occur without access to the parameters relevant to the engagement problem and solution. The quicker the valid parameters can be found and brought to bear on the resolution of the business issues, the more efficient the decision making can be. One area I particularly like in this book is Chapter 16 -- the Enterprise Search and Indexing... An specific example is the explanation of the 'Crawler' process. Although I'm not convinced the entire MS search engine is the one to implement vis-a-vis some third party tools, but the explanation the author provides as to how the MS search functions is the most understandable description of how each process works I have found anywhere. The companion CD makes isolating extended reading much easier. Those areas where I was already knowledgeable, Mr. English is spot on in his handling. This is not the tome for the faint hearted nor is it light bedtime reading, but as a reference to the specific areas he covers I recommend it.
