October 14, 2009: I've already read this series a few years ago, but never finished because number 13 wasn't out. Now that I've finally gotten the last book, I've decided to re-read the first twelve and finish the series as a whole. Reading Lynn Ewing now, as a 21 year old is a lot different from reading it as a 14/15 year old girl. If your a young to mid-teenaged girl who enjoyed Twilight and the Harry Potter series, you'll more than likely enjoy the DOTM books. The writing is pretty good overall. Ewing has found a pretty good medium where, 13 year old can understand what she's talking about and see the pictures she's painting, while older readers can also get through the books without being annoyed at reading a childrens book. The books contain a lot of personal self-searching, discovering of your true self identity, growing up and making choices between right and wrong (or sometimes choices between really bad and not so bad). There's a lot of interaction with the four girls and their friendship. They're bonds shift and change and grow all while dealing with homework, boys, mothers, and ancient evils. There's interactions with boys. If your looking for romance, these probably aren't the books for you. They are very PG, hand-holding, making out, nothing more than that. If your looking for a good thrill, these may spark your interest. Theres a good amount of action and powers and epic battles at the end of every book.
If your looking for a bit of mystery, The Secret Scroll definitly can help you there. Catty is a DOTM who has the power to time-travel. All of her life she's wanted to travel back in time to the only memory she has-a car crash and a fire in the desert where her foster mother, Kendra found her all alone. She knows thats where she last saw her mother and is desperate to see her. Staton, a Follower, or servant of the ancient evil the Atrox, ambushes her in the hallway at school one day and does just that. Takes her back to see her mother. Catty recieves a secret scroll from a mystery man who continues to pop up behind her at random, demanding that she needs to be the one to destroy the scroll. What happens when Catty is reunited with her mother? Where has Staton been and why did he leave Serena? Who is the mystery man and why does he think SHE must be the one to destroy the scroll? The secret scroll is a much better book than book 3. There's a lot more interesting things that happen, and a much better story line. It's about multiple issues and story lines which helps keep you interested as compared to book 3 being just about Jimena and Veto. I recommend this book to young teenage girls who enjoy a bit of mild romance, mystery, thrill, and fantasy.I Also Recommend: Book of Shadows (Sweep Series #1), Marked (House of Night Series #1), The Twilight Saga Collection, Harry Potter Paperback Boxed Set (Books 1-7), The Blue Is for Nightmares Collection.

September 06, 2008: Vanessa, Stanton and now Catty are my fave characters in the series. Book 4 centers on Catty who has to protect a scroll and the daughter's enemies are after it.
