    Synopsis

In perhaps her strongest work to date, Lois Lowry once again creates a mysterious but plausible future world. It is a society ruled by savagery and deceit and that shuns and discards the weak. Left orphaned and physically flawed, young Kira faces a frightening, uncertain future. Blessed with an almost magical talent that keeps her alive, she struggles with ever broadening responsibilities in her quest for truth, discovering things that will change her life forever.

As she did in THE GIVER, Lowry challenges readers to imagine what our world could become, how people could evolve, and what could be considered valuable. Every reader will be taken by Kira’s plight and will long ponder her haunting world and the hope for the future.

    Annotation

Lame and suddenly orphaned, Kira is mysteriously removed from her squalid village to live in the palatial Council Edifice, where she is expected to use her gifts as a weaver to do the bidding of the all-powerful Guardians.

    Publishers Weekly

After conjuring the pitfalls of a technologically advanced society in The Giver, Lowry looks toward a different type of future to create this dark, prophetic tale with a strong medieval flavor. Having suffered numerous unnamed disasters (aka, the Ruin), civilization has regressed to a primitive, technology-free state; an opening author's note describes a society in which "disorder, savagery, and self-interest" rule. Kira, a crippled young weaver, has been raised and taught her craft by her mother, after her father was allegedly killed by "beasts." When her mother dies, Kira fears that she will be cast out of the village. Instead, the society's Council of Guardians installs her as caretaker of the Singer's robe, a precious ceremonial garment depicting the history of the world and used at the annual Gathering. She moves to the Council Edifice, a gothic-style structure, one of the few to survive the Ruin. The edifice and other settings, such as the Fen--the village ghetto--and the small plot where Annabella (an elder weaver who mentors Kira after her mother's death) lives are especially well drawn, and the characterizations of Kira and the other artists who cohabit the stone residence are the novel's greatest strength. But the narrative hammers at the theme of the imprisoned artist. And readers may well predict where several important plot threads are headed (e.g., the role of Kira's Guardian, Jamison; her father's disappearance), while larger issues, such as the society's downfall, are left to readers' imaginations. October 08, 2009: Gathering Blue Review

    By Lois Lowry

A girl named Kira is sitting in the field of the leaving waiting for her mother's soul to leave her body. When she goes home she finds out that her house has been burned. So Kira is sent to the courthouse and is to live there. After she is there she meets a boy named Thomas who is a woodcarver. Kira is a very talented in stitchery and is supposed to fix the singers robe in time for the big sing. The thing is that Kira does not know what dyes to use to make the string different colors so she is sent to an old lady named Annabel to learn what flowers to use in the dye making process. Her mom taught her how to stitch but not how to make the different color string. See Kira has a problem she has a twisted leg and can't walk very good so it takes her a long time to get to Annabel's. So every day Kira gets out of bed and takes a long walk to Annabel's house to take her classes. About a month through kiras classes she is getting ready to go to Annabel's house when the leader of the courthouse she is living in who is her guardian to come to her and tells her not to go to Annabel's because she had died. Kira was very very sad and worried about how she was going to learn the rest of the dye making. So for several days she sits in her room and works and works on the singers robe to get it done in time for the big sing. She was visiting Thomas one day when he told her that he was working on the singer's walking stick. So they both worked very hard and then the day before the sing they both finished their work and went to the big sing. So my opinion is that this is a good book and that you should read it.

October 06, 2009: Book Review Outline

Book title and author: "Gathering Blue" By: Lois Lowry

    Title of review: Rating

    Number of stars (1 to 5): 2

Introduction: I am reviewing Gathering blue for the people who would like to read it, but are not sure if they want to or not. I did not like it at all. This story does teach you a lot about making choices. The author's purpose of this story was probably to inform you on the way that people live or used to live in some places.

Description and summary of main points: This book is about a girl named Kira. She is a kid that has no parents or any family because they are all dead. (Or so she thinks)She was born with a twisted leg so it makes it hard for her to do the work she is supposed to do. The only thing that keeps her from dying is her talent. That talent is weaving. Kira figures out many secrets that were kept from her though out this book.

Evaluation: The book achieved its goal which was to teach us about making choices. I still think that Kira didn't make some of the right choices, but just like in the real world she'll learn from her mistakes. If you like sad, depressing books then this is the book for you. If you don`t like these kinds of books then I suggest that you don`t read this one.

Conclusion: In conclusion I think this book is not a good book. I do not recommend this book. It`s sad confusing, and some this do not even go with the story. The one good thing about the book was that it was a little suspenseful, but other than that it wasn`t really good. I gave this book a two star because it could have been a lot better. This is the end of my review. Thank you for reading it!
