    Synopsis

With her signature narrative grace, Edwidge Danticat brings Haiti's beautiful queen Anacaona to life. Queen Anacaona was the wife of one of her island's rulers, and a composer of songs and poems, making her popular among her people. Haiti was relatively quiet until the Spanish conquistadors discovered the island and began to settle there in 1492. The Spaniards treated the natives very cruelly, and when the natives revolted, the Spanish governor of Haiti ordered the arrests of several native nobles, including Anacaona, who was eventually captured and executed, to the horror of her people.

May 05, 2008: I just feel it's important to point out that the name Haiti comes from the the indigenous people's name for the island, so all the reviewers that are saying that the book is historically inaccurate based on this alone need to re-learn their history. I've read many of the Royal Diaries books and loved them all!

December 28, 2007: To say that Anacaona was from Haiti is completely wrong since Haiti was not in existence when the Spaniards colonized the Island known originally as Hispaniola and much later divided when African slaves, some set free by their masters and some that escaped, fled to that side of the island because it was vertually impenetrable thus making it safe as a refuge. After the French and Dutch were forced out by Spanish conquerors, the western side of the island now inhabited by the free slaves was taken over and colonized by the French, hence the French-Creole language presently spoken in that country. Just figured I would give some correct historical facts as to the setting or set up of the Island back in 1492 when Colombus arrived.
