(Paperback)
Proving once and for all that standards-compliant design does not equal dull design, this inspiring tome uses examples from the landmark CSS Zen Garden site as the foundation for discussions on how to create beautiful, progressive CSS-based Web sites. By using the Zen Garden sites as examples of how CSS design techniques and approaches can be applied to specific Web challenges, authors Dave Shea and Molly Holzschlag provide an eye-opening look at the range of design methods made possible by CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). By the time you've finished perusing the volume, you'll have a new understanding of the graphically rich, fully accessible sites that CSS design facilitates. In sections on design, layout, imagery, typography, effects, and themes, Dave and Molly take you through every phase of the design process--from striking a sensible balance between text and graphics to creating eye-popping special effects (no scripting required).

July 29, 2009: If you have a basic understanding of the syntax and usage of CSS, this may serve as a great second book. It will won't necessarily teach the fundamentals as much as show you inspiring ways to put them to use.

June 29, 2006: I have been following the Zen Garden for some time and was reluctant to purchase the book because I thought 'what more can it teach me?' Well, a lot more. If you are great with code and want to learn more about the design end of things....this is great. Also, if you want to learn the code it's got a lot of examples, but you should have a basic understanding of HTML & CSS. The main thing this book gives you is ideas and principles for coming up with a design that will work with pure CSS, and then techniques for implementing that design. The chapter on special effects goes above and beyond. The book is well-written and is a joy to read. Sidebars and full-color illustrations keep me interested. It's broken into tiny little sections within each chapter that you can finish whenever you have spare time. I highly reccommend this book!
