ARE YOU A GIFTED CHILD Looking for special opportunities?
When this peculiar ad appears in the newspaper, dozens of children enroll to take a series of mysterious, mind-bending tests. (And you, dear listener, can test your wits right alongside them.) But in the end just four very special children will succeed. Their challenge: to go on a secret mission that only the most intelligent and resourceful
children could complete. To accomplish it they will have to go undercover at the Learning Institute for the Very Enlightened, where the only rule is that there are no rules.
As our heroes face physical and mental trials beyond their wildest imaginations, they have no choice but to turn to each other for support. But with their newfound friendship at stake, will they be able to pass the most important test of all?
Welcome to the mysterious benedict society.
Kids who are itching for a boarding-school-set fantasy-adventure in between visits to Hogwarts might pleasantly pass the time listening to this quirky tale, which is narrated with panache and a tone of childlike curiosity by Roy. When an ad reading "Are you a gifted child looking for special opportunities?" appears in a local paper, it's hard for many children to resist. But only four out of dozens pass the rigorous mind-bending tests that prove they are special and talented enough to undertake a mysterious mission at the Learning Institute for the Very Enlightened (as assigned by narcoleptic benefactor Mr. Benedict). Reynie, Kate, Sticky and Constance band together using their unique gifts (be it for photographic memory, puzzle-solving or acrobatics) to uncover the dastardly plot of the Learning Institute's founder, Ledroptha Curtain. Roy's voice, masculine and scratchy, but able to reach a youthful high pitch, is an enjoyable companion for the four protagonist's exploits. Though some of Mr. Curtain's plans sound preposterously convoluted, they are humorously so. Listeners are rewarded when all wraps up nicely by program's end. Ages 10-up. (Mar.)

November 02, 2009: The Mysterious Benedict Society
Trenton Lee StewartLittle Brown Co.Adventure A series of four excruciatingly hard tests, "Special Opportunities" that await you, and a narcoleptic man with a very clichéd sense of humor... it all sounds rather dull, doesn't it? But what if in the end, you were a hero, a world savior, and a sheer genius? If this reward sounds appealing, then The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart will entrance you, page after page. In The Mysterious Benedict Society, 4 young, brilliant minds are brought together by the knowledgeable Mr. Benedict, a man who discovered hidden messages being broadcasted through devices such as radio, television, and other electronic contraptions. If the messages continue, then Ledroptha Curtain - the criminal mastermind and sender of the messages - will gain control of every human mind on the planet. The Children are sent to the Learning Institute for the Very Enlightened on Nomansan Island, a "school" where Mr. Curtain poisons young minds to gain power. But can four children stop the dawning of an era filled with unthinkable darkness and poverty? To successfully understand the book, you must pay close attention to each character. The genius Mr. Benedict and his faculty - Number two, Rhonda, and Milligan - are the heart of the whole operation. Together they guide the children through their perilous journey. Mr. Curtain is the enemy, who sends the messages to gain mind control. He, too, has a brilliant mind, making the battle even more intense. Lastly, The Mysterious Benedict Society consists of four young children: Reynard Muldoon, Sticky Washington, Kate Wetherall, and Constance Contraire. Reynard (a.k.a. Reynie) is the decoder - he can remember and interpret any disguised or twisted message that may or may not be critical to the success of their mission. Sticky Washington is the brain - any logical question you have, Sticky can answer. Guaranteed. Kate Wetherall is the daredevil, the one that can perform any stunt that you can dream up - as long as she has her bucket of supplies. Constance Contraire is a small, stubborn little girl, who knows no fear or danger. She has a simple mind, which is also beneficial to the success of The Mysterious Benedict Society. The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart is a book that anyone with an open mind and a hunger for adventure can easily fall in love with. The suspense and mystery is enough to keep you hooked until the last page. There are also 2 other books in the series so the journey doesn't have to end. In fact, it just might be the very best book I've ever read; and who knows, you may think the same once you read it, too.I Also Recommend: The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Perilous Journey (Mysterious Benedict Society Series #2), The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Perilous Journey (Mysterious Benedict Society Series #2), The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Perilous Journey (Mysterious Benedict Society Series #2).
