Books that unfold to double as a bumper pad in baby's crib or a patchwork blanket? That's the idea behind two titles from Sandra Magsamen: Baby Love and My Blanket. Each panel of Baby Love boasts a liftable flap in the shape of an animal's head, which reveals a clever answer to the question, "What did the mommy animal say to her baby?" ("I love you a ton," says the elephant mother). Each of the four squares of My Blanket sports a number sewn on the patch. Velcro snaps and a plastic pouch provide easy storage. The embroidered yellow star on a green background shines and encourages babies to touch its fuzzy surface. Pulling the Velcro snap with printed text on a red cloth background presents "I love my blanket with the…." Then there are three padded pieces to pull, which reveal colors and some design. Next, the cloth book opens to full size with eight heart shapes containing a variety of textures and designs—one of which is a reflective piece of Mylar. Babies can play with this book, chew, drool, and touch. The packaging notes that the book can be wiped clean with a damp cloth, and if you are brave enough to try hand washing, it may work if the book/blanket gets really grimy. The closing message is a bit treacly, but may appeal to some: "But my favorite blanket is the on that covers me with your love."
