    Synopsis

    “A STRIKING NEW TALENT.”
    ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY
Jackson Workman Pickens—known to most as “Work”—mindlessly holds together his disintegrating life: a failing law practice left to him when his father, Ezra, mysteriously disappeared, a distant wife who shares their loveless marriage, and an estranged sister who bore the brunt of their childhood trauma.

And then Ezra’s body is discovered.

“READS LIKE A BOOK ON FIRE.”—PAT CONROY
Set to inherit his father’s fortune, Work becomes a prime suspect. But so does his sister, Jean. As much as Work’s life was overshadowed by his domineering father, Jean’s life was nearly destroyed by him. But does that make her capable of a vicious murder? Fearing the worst, Work launches his own investigation, crossing paths with a power-hungry detective, a string of damning evidence, and the ugly rumors that swirl within his small, moneyed Southern town.

“AN EXCEPTIONALLY DEEP AND COMPLEX MYSTERY THRILLER.”
    PUBLISHERS WEEKLY (STARRED REVIEW)
Desperate for the redemption that has eluded him for so many years and stripped of everything he once valued, he fights to save his sister and clear his name—in this poignant and thrilling anatomy of a murder and its ripple effect within a family and a community.

The New York Times - Janet Maslin

The King of Lies, John Hart's seething, roiling, boiling North Carolina murder story … crossbreeds enough Grisham-style intrigue and Turow-style brooding to make for a sulfurous mix. Mr. Hart's prose style keeps it bubbling, sometimes spilling over the top.

    Biography

John Hart was born and raised in North Carolina. For a time he practiced criminal defense law, but left his practice to write The King of Lies and work for a major Wall Street firm. John used to do foolish things, like fly helicopters and sail small boats across large oceans. Now, with two young daughters and a wife whom he loves, he writes books, which is harder but safer. John still makes his home in North Carolina.

November 01, 2009: Jackson "Work" Pickens is a small town lawyer accused of the murder of his iconic father, Ezra. As the circumstantial evidence against him grows his friends and colleagues drift away. Believing that his sister, Jean, is guilty he tries to protect her by playing a dangerous game of "chicken" with the local police detective as he races to discover the truth before time runs out and he is convicted of the crime. Meanwhile his entire life unravels and Work is forced to evaluate his career choice and country club lifestyle as well as his relationship with his domineering father, his gold-digging trophy wife and his lifelong love and mistress. His entire life has been a lie and only the truth will set him free.

The King of Lies is an impressive debut novel by John Hart. With crisp dialogue and an engrossing plot it is a quick and satisfying read. King of Lies would make a great movie.

    Great Beach Book!by Anonymous

August 25, 2009: I'm so glad I took this book to the beach with me. It was so much fun to have a book that I was totally hooked on and plenty of time to just be lazy and read. The main character was believable and very likable. The villains were very easy to dislike. The plot grabbed me quickly and did not let go until the last page. Being a native Carolinian, I really liked the setting and am partial to North Carolina writers. John Hart is one of, if not the, best I've read. I highly recommend his other books, especially The Last Child.

I Also Recommend: The Last Child, Down River.
